What do you think the average MPG is for a semi truck?

Assuming it's a typical semi truck with a full load, I believe their average MPG is somewhere in the 4-6 range, but I think some of the newer trucks get slightly better mileage too.

Something to remember though, while 4-6 MPG seems terrible, consider how much gas you would burn putting that same load of stuff from the semi into the back of even the most fuel efficient station wagon/SUV/minivan. The semi-truck is still far and above more fuel efficient.

Hello, Popeye, I own my own truck so I will do my best to put on the thinking cap and give the figures as close as I can. My truck cost $52,000 used with 224,00 miles on it from a lease purchase agreement. 2004 freightliner classic and the truck is payed off. plates cost 1600.00 a year, permits are 200 a year Diesel fuel is close to 3 bucks a gallon and I have dual 120 gallon tanks. I get close to 7 mpg if I drive 55. If I do not and get closer to 65, then my mileage goes down to about 5.8 to 6.2 mpg. I drive about 650 to 725 miles per 11 hour shift so you can get the idea for cost daily and weekly. Tires are not cheap, well over 3000.00 for a set of 10. Road taxes are $550.00 a year, insurance is $21.93 a week. This does not take into account what a repair will run, say for a kingpin set, which can run $2000.00 Repairs are expensive but you can still do ok out here. Freight is picking up slightly. Most modern, aerodynamic tractors with a high roof sleeper and cab fairings will achieve 7 mpg while pulling a van type trailer. Like you mentioned, there are many factors that can affect a truck's fuel mileage. Air resistance and rolling drag due to underinflated tires are two of the biggest factors at highway speed. Studies have shown for every mph over 55, fuel mileage is decreased by.1 mpg.

Here are some examples of mileage for trucks I have driven.

1967 Mack DM800 10 wheel dump= 5 mpg

1977 Kenworth W900 trailer dump=4-4.5 mpg

1989 Ford LTL 9000 with dry van=5.5-5.8 mpg

1989 Ford LTL 9000 with flatbed=6.0-6.2 mpg

2007 Freightliner Century class S/T with dry van=7.2 mpg

most range from 3-7 mpg on average

2008 KW t2000 400 cummins 9 speed 355 gears 8.06 mpg over a 13 week avragage @ 68 mph
