How do I establish "terminal carbons" of complementary DNA strands?

I have a good handle on DNA but haven't been able to find any info in the text, or helpful info online, about what exactly a 'terminal carbon' is. How do I establish the terminal carbon of a 3' to 5' DNA strand?
