Can I use a Linksys Access Point with my internet connection?

My dad just got a new wi-fi laptop and I'm going over later to get it all set up. He has roadrunner, but no wireless router. I have an extra access point laying around and I was wondering if I can use that. I've always used Linksys wireless routers, so I'm not sure if an access point will work. Is there anything I need to be aware of when using this?

He also has a desktop, but it's not at his house right now. When he does get it, I'm assuming it would be best to get a router so he can plug it in with ethernet, if it doesn't have a wireless card.

Question, is this an access point or a router? An access point needs to connect to as router via WiFi. So you are going to need a WiFi router in the infrastructure somewhere.

You're right. If he is only using the laptop for now, then yes, the access point will work just fine. However, when he gets the desktop, you will need to get him the router.
