There is no doubt that Mauer wants to eventually join the Yankees. I know that the Yankees, in turn, want him in the worse way! Posada is gearing down so the Yankees will need to fill that slot for the next decade.

I honestly don't believe he hits free agency.

But if he does, it will be a bidding war between the Red Sox and the Yankees. (Isn't it always?)

With the age of Posada and Varitek, both teams will be in need of a full-time catcher. (The Red Sox have Victor Martinez, but he'll be a full-time 1B and only an emergency catcher in the next few years -- if the Sox extend him.)

The Yankees are known for their spending power, but this will be the brass ring for the Sox. I truly believe the Sox would give him the richest contract in baseball history. I wouldn't put it past the Yankees to offer the same.

While Joe Mauer may not be a better hitter than an Alex Rodriguez, and isn't great at throwing out baserunners, there has never been a better catcher who hits for average than Joe Mauer, and that alone is worth the richest contract in baseball history.

    Red Sox or Yankees.

I'm sure every team in baseball would drool at the possibility of adding Joe Mauer to their team. But I am holding out hope that he and Twins management can make a deal to keep him in Minnesota. Our hometown boy is so beloved here, more so than he could ever be in a fickle city like New York. And if they can come up with $13.5 million for Michael Cuddyer, they surely know that they will have to do better by Joe. Let's give it time to play out. I want to see Mauer in a Twins uniform for the next 10 years. We can't let the best catcher of modern times get away.

Nationals: They need someone to get buts in the seat and with Mauer they would draw good enough attendance to pay for him, sort of like why the Mariners are bringing back Ken Griffey Jr. Plus Jesus Flores is coming off of shoulder surgery, they could also take him to trade for prospects. would benefit hitting in front of adam dunn

Mets: They are in dier need of a catcher, most likely would also trade him for prospects.

Rays: need a catcher, could benefit from batting behind crawford and upton in front of longoria

Yankees are not a likely option they have posada and molina (yes mauer is better then both but they wouldn't do it to posada)

Red Sox likely not an option either (varitek accepted his extension so they wouldnt bring in someone to replace him cause he cant move to DH cause of Ortiz)

Other possibilities: Mariners (probably wouldnt pay that much but need a catcher), Giants, Astros, Cubs
