It would be the police are coming. If you wanted to say the police is coming here. That would be correct.

Would it be possible that they were looking for someone who MAY have been at your apartment, maybe a wanted person? An arrest warrant is as good as a search warrant if the police have probable cause to believe that the wanted person is in a particular place. They may have received a tip that someone else was at that address. that would explain why "...they proceeded with pointing the flashlight around looking for anyone else in the apartment." You can always ask why the police did this, but since they did not arrest you, seize any property, and you let them in the apartment, there is really nothing you can do to get them in trouble. They did nothing illegal.

always use a plural verb with police like following
The police are coming or The police have arrested a friend of mine, (not 'The police has')Note that a person in the police is 'a policeman / a policewoman / a police officer' (not 'a police')

The police are coming. If you wanted it to be singular, you would need to say the police officer is coming.

In fact it is "Police is coming" . The team of police is singular form not plural one. So it should be 'IS'

Police "is" coming is grammatically incorrect. That leaves you with only one choice, i.e., police "are" coming.
