Would you rather have a fun job for lower pay, or stressfull job for better pay?

My current job is a nursing assistant, very physically demanding, emotionally too.I make $11/hourly. I work full time 3-11pm shift. It takes me 45 minutes to get there. I am 40, married have children and just really want a change of scenery.Plus I cant help kids with their homework, they are in bed by the time i get home at midnite. I am tired of changing old peoples diapers. I cant go back to school right now, just not possible, or I am too tired, I dont know. But I may have a chance to work full time at a dollar store, now I know the pay is way less, however, it is much closer to my home, 15 minutes. which means I will spend less in gas. And I will be home earlier, the store closes at 9. But 10 thru the holidays. If it were you, what would you do? I mean if I cant make it on the measly wages, I could always go back to another nursing home. But I am physically and mentally drained. I always hate making decisions, i'm afraid to make the wrong one.

Do the math. First, subtract the gas. Figure 4 gallons (2 each way?) ~ $11. At $88/shift (8 hrs x $11/hr = $88/shift). So $88 - $11 means you're getting $77/shift. Next, you have to count in the 2 hours commuting to your high stress job. So ten hrs @ $77 = $7.70/hr. Factor in being able to see your kids & husband at night, less stress, more energy - how much is that worth? And what does the other job pay? You are most likely better off being closer to home for a little less pay and a lot less stress.

Four months ago I quit a relatively high-paying job because I hated the atmosphere and other things that were going on. I had no desire to go there anymore. I'd been there almost eight years. A month ago, I started a job that pays less, and I will have to budget, do without some "luxuries." But I really like the work, and I like the people I'm working with. It's a smaller, more friendly company and atmosphere. Now, if I had a lot of debt or for some reason needed the extra money, it might be different. But right now, I'm happier than I've been in quite awhile, even though I'm making less money. And I'm not stressing all the time - that alone makes all the difference.

If you think you can make it on a Dollar Store salary, go for it.

But you have kids. They're going to grow up and drain your wallet as they do.

All jobs are stressful at some point, but it's not like we're all in the position to quit and do something we love that'll also put the kids through college.

i would rather have a fun job with lower pay because the pay will increase as i stay on the job so i believe that would be the best course of action

Been there done tthat! Take it from me...I took back the lower paying job for my own health. No sence killing yourself! Paying all that money to Doctor's because you get paid better.

Better pay, I'll destress when I get home.

Edit: Ok, am I answering for YOUR situation or just my opinion on lower pay/fun vs. higher pay/stress? Why am I getting thumbs down just for stating that it's ALL work, never "fun". Fun is your personal life.
