What can i buy a horse for Christmas? and problems on the roads?
I sort of own 2 horses, and i don't know what to get them for Christmas. I am 13, so don't have much money so it cant be too expensive, but i don't want it to be cheap and tacky as i love them SO much. please help.
Also when i ride 1 of them on the roads if a lorry, bus or large vehicle goes past, he starts rearing and putting in large bucks, before he has broken a car windscreen, is there anything i could do to prevent this, or at least calm him down
thank you for any ideas
he is trained and fine around cars, as he is 13, but it is just large vehicles.

you need to take your horse out on a road that rarely ever has cars (im sure there are some around where you live cause there are lots near my house) or on your driveway if its long enough
let your horse smell and see the vehicle and let it kinda hangout around it for a minute
have a family member drive a truck or something bigger then a car past your horse multiple times starting out very slow then getting faster but not too fast
be sure to turn your horse off the side of the road when a vehicle is going fast, get in a ditch or just try and move atleast 3-5 feet off the edge of the road, stop your horse and turn its face towards the vehicle to let it know what is going on, make it stand there while the vehicle is going past
if it doesnt get accustom to vehicles on the road then that horse does not need to be riding down the road in the first place it is endangering not only you and itsself but also the cars that are going past cause if it ever runs out in front of someone and somebody hits it or gets badly hurt your parents could get sued
as for presents for your horse, get them a new halter or a bag of carrots, apples, their favorite treats, and make them a salad before you feed them im sure they would like that just as much as anything else

Hmm, I have always bought them likits as they love them, (google it) and last a while. It is quite concerning what you are saying about your horse in large traffic,
Please make sure you ALWAYS wear a reflective tabbard as these can make soo much difference, the horse should have something refelctive on too, but a reflective tabbard is very effective and quite cheap. Maybe you could but somehting refective for them, reflective leg bands are great as they catch the drivers eye, or maybe a tail guard.
Anyway, I would always advise hacking out in company if this is the case and having a lead horse, this may not make any difference at first but over time your horse will gain confidence from other horses. Make sure you are confident too and do not anticipate his jumping around.
Find out if it is the noise seeing the vehicle that makes the differance, if it is the noise then playing a tape with traffic sounds on outside the stable can make a huge difference or even using ear plugs. If it is te sight of the lorrys etc then I would adivse trying to not let them pass of to wave your arm out clearly but ofcourse safley to alert them too slow, remember a horse cannot see a vehicle until it has gone past and slightly infront of it, so the slower the approach the better.
Finally, never be affrain to wear a neck strap for extra security, I try to always ride in one or use the martingale strap, it really does make a differace and the horses apprichiate it much more than a jab in the mouth if they are bucking or rearing. Some of the top event riders never ride without them so do not feel stupid. Finally, hope this has been helpful and you are still reading, good luck and keep safe and visible riding on the roads, have a great chrisitmas. :)

The only thing my horse would want for christmas is some kind of food. As far as the big trucks go I had the same problem. When I would see them coming I would look for a place like a driveway where I could get off the road then I would face the traffic and tell my horse in a calm voice to chill out. After a while we could get closer and closer until now I just turn her into the ditch and face the traffic until the truck or bus has gone by. She has gotten 100 percent better.

Horses don't know it's christmas, so it won't make a difference what you buy them.
As for the road, you can get him used to cars and lorries while in the yard or barn and have someone drive past, that or go on the road with someone who has a quiet horse, but really if a horse is nervous on the roads to the point it's rearing and is kicking at cars then it would be better not to ride on the road if avoidable, either you could end up in an accident or could cause one.

CAKE! The only thing horses will truely appreciate from people is food, becasue they cannot understand material possesions!
My favourite is a nice Christmas pudding made from Oats, chaff, pony nuts, lickit (the runny kind not the hard ones) and some chucks of veg all moulded together! Fun =]
And as for the roads, don't continue hacking out. Is he like that even wih other horses?
You could try just walking (not riding) him past parked vehicles, and then when he gets better start walking him out (NOT riding) so he can gain confidence when you are next to him on the ground. But be careful because if he hasn't got any better with parked vans then he may hurt you if you take him out alone!
Good luck, and Merry Christmas to you and Your Horse!

Im 14 and i've wondered the same on Christmas gifts for my horses.
and i have no clue i just got them a bag of horse cookies.
And on the road very simple, he is not ready for the road yet, that is very dangerous you, or him could have gotten suverly hurt.
you need to have a friend (old engough to drive) drive past you in you'r yard and get him used to a car pasing him.
in time he should be fine with big vehicle's and buses

Order horse rhythm beads. They're beautiful, useful, and the horse will actually appreciate the results found.

Don't worry, she's really kind and easy to contact and work with.
Also, in regards to the trouble on the road, the larger vibrations and noise are most likely bothering your horse when this happens. The best solution I can think of would be to get a higher quality trailer where the effects won't be noticed as much. I'm sure there must be a way to help ease the stress and train the horse, however. I suggest asking Elaine Polny, the woman who you would get the rhythm beads from.

A. Horses don't understand xmas so save your money.
B. Since you are getting your horse something for xmas this leads me to believe you are coddling your horse rather then being the boss... Rearing is a majorly bad habbit that can get you killed.
Rather then waiting for your horse to react (since you clearly won't stay off the roads) pull your horse into a circle and work his feet before he reacts to the car and until the car has passed.. If he still wants to buck, woop his ***. Spank for side to side with split reins and make him work his feet.
