why did the Jews kill Jesus?

My brother said that Jesus wanted the Jews to follow the new testament because basically the old testament was man made then the Jews wanted him killed and told the Romans to kill Jesus but the Romans didn't really want to kill Jesus and the Jews was so vocal about killing Jesus the Romans decided to kill him .

Or is he making this up,

can someone tell me what happened,

so many people who dont know what they are talking about or are just going by what others have told them without their own research. no wonder the church is in trouble and weak kneed. Do not think the old testiment is man made. current work on bible codes prove it is NOT man made. Daniel's prophecies prove it is not man made also, as there is the hebrew version and the greek version translated over 300 years before Jesus. there is more proof of the bible than there is of ANY ancient writtings (homers illiad and such)

    quote:

    1. A night trial was illegal in both Judea and the Roman Empire

---the roman trial was after sun up. the jewish trial was during the start of twilight.. a legal technicallity that allowed the sanhedrin to operate.

    2. The basis for the charge of blasphemy against Jesus was unclear. This was necessary in order to prosecute according to Judean law.

---considering the use of false witnesses, clarity was not the issue.

    3. The witnesses against Jesus did not agree and accordingly a mistrial must be declared.

---conviction was based not on false witnesses, but rather by Jesus own words before the sanhedrin.

    4. A trial in a private residence was illegal in both Judea and the Roman Empire.

---the high priest's palace is not a private residence.

    5. The Sanhedrin did not have the right to condemn anyone to death at this time.

---the sanhedrin had the right to condemn to death any they felt like and allowed to execute them according to the law. they wanted to crucify Jesus on a cross as a public show that he was not the messiah. rome had reserved the crucifitions to themselves so everyone would know THEY did it. that is why putting to death by crucifixtion was reserved to the romans alone.

    6. A crucifixion would never have taken place at Passover.

---that is why it happened the day before, and as sundown aproached the legs of the living were broken so they would die within hours.

    7. Jesus’ anticipation of his death as a covenant sacrifice is out of Greek mythology, not the Jewish religion.

---the scriptures describe Jesus death hundreds of years before the greeks had a mythology.. if anyone copied someone, it was the greeks from the jews.

    8. Pilate did not have a good reason to execute Jesus as “King of the Judeans.”

---the leaders threatened trouble if he did not. word of ceasar's death arrived shortly before and pilate's patron had been executed for harrassing the jews. pilate's handling of the jews had to change because the new ceasar was friendly to the jews. jesus lineage made him king of the jews by birthright so even by right of being joseph's son, he was KING OF THE JEWS.

    9. Again, there was only one high priest. There were no high priests.

---high priests was a class of jews who were either related to the current high priest, or thanks to the romans, related to a living high priest that had been placed in office and removed. Annas was THE high priest because he was the first high priest that was still living.. and in the jewish religion, the high priest stays the high priest until death. caiaphus was the reigning (current) high priest.

    10. There was no such thing as the high priest(s) joining in on the mocking of a prisoner while the prisoner is being punished.

---i do not believe caiaphus was present during the trail before pilate, but plenty of the high priest class was there to act on his behalf.. most likely annas was there to ensure things went smoothly.

    11. There was no such custom in Judea as releasing a prisoner at Passover.

---just because no documentation has been found (YET) doesnt mean it never happened. the bible accounts are first hand witnesses and testify to it happening. pilate may have only started the custom the previous year, and could have ended the custom after Jesus. who knows. the experts use to say there was no hittites either.

    12. Prisoners condemned to crucifixion would carry the cross-bar, not the whole cross.

---do not confuse historical facts with church traditions or use modern word definitions for what was written 2000 years ago. Jesus did not carry the cross (cross bar or whole cross) the whole way as testified in the bible.

    13. There was no such place as Golgotha at that time.

---hahahaha.. if the ancient writtings say there was, there was.. besides, i have seen word studies that the name golgotha most likely predated the romans and the greeks. one study proposes it is the place where king david buried goliath's head, so the name golgotha would have been a local or regional name for a place that had a more popular name (mt of olives?)

    14. Jesus, or anyone else, would not be known as “Christ, the King of Israel.” The Messiah concept was a completely different idea.

---jewish tradition held there were 2 messiahs, and they were unable to reconcile them being one person. the jewish leadership was looking for the triumphant messiah and they were troubled by the writtings of the suffering servant (messiah). recent archeology recovered a story prior to Jesus time about a resurrected messiah after being a suffering servant so the idea, while it may not have been popular, was known at the time of Jesus.

    15. Crucifixion was used only for seditionists, murderers and insurrectionists, not for religious reasons or “blasphemy”. Rome would never have approved of using crucifixion for punishment for local lawbreakers, only for those who were out to overthrow the Empire. Judean religious law as very specific as far as punishment for blasphemy. The punishment for blasphemy was stoning to death and the hanging of the body by the neck from a tree or impaling it on a stake.

---as stated above, the jews could prove Jesus was the KING OF THE JEWS by birthright and could have made a case to pilate on that alone. their motivation to crucify Jesus was to show he was not the messiah and that he was in fact cursed of God (one who hands on a tree)

    16. Roman law denied burial to a crucified man consequently, Pilate would never have given Joseph of Aramathia permission to take Jesus’ body for it would have violated Roman laws.

---pilate had Jesus scourged and then crucified. he already violated roman law by handing out 2 capital punishments for the same crime. he had reason to provoke the jews for forcing him into the crucifixtion so giving the body to Joseph is not hard to believe.

    17. When Jesus entered Jerusalem prior to the Passover, it was during the Feast of the Booths and that is the reason that the people were waving palm branches and yelling “Hosannah.”

---strictly conjecture. all that was needed for palm branches was an early spring. not unusual or unheard of. besides, Jesus entry into jerusalem had to be in the spring just before the crucifixtion to fulfill daniel's timeline.

too many people who dont believe wave their arms and say not true, ivory tower types hold onto any little thing that looks like it is a contradiction and never look for the truth.. the seekers find all the pieces and with the wisdom of God put the pieces together to gain a better understanding.

How did Jesus kill the Jews ? Technically the Romans killed Jesus but the Jews condemned him. They could have let him go but didn't. And they tried him. But keep in mind this was only some of the Jews. And in the end it didn't matter because Jesus had control over death.

He is making it up, or extremely misinformed.

The Romans would not listen to the Jews anyways. The Romans did not like the Jews, for the most part. They were an unwanted minority. They had no influence on Roman law/politics.

The old testament is based on the Tanakh, which is what the Jews follow- NOT the old testament. And it is not "man-made".

Jesus was charged with SEDITION, a charge against Rome. Not proclaiming to be the Jewish messiah. He was not the only one who did so, there were hundreds, before and after. And on the night he was crucified, he was not the only Jew to be crucified by the Romans.

Jesus was killed by the Romans on a Roman cross and he was among thousands of Jews killed this way.

Crucifixion was not something Jews did.

I know I have said this before but I think it is necessary to repeat it and that is I thought that Christianity taught that Jesus died for the sins of mankind so two questions:1) If this is the case why put the blame on the Jews? and 2) If he hadn't died how would you have your salvation.

Several key stories can be related to the Christian mythology tale of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Only some of them attribute the actual killing of Jesus Christ by the direct hands of the Jewish community of Israel at that time.

While crucifixion was in fact a method in which the Romans executed felons in the time of Jesus, there is no way of authenticating any Jewish involvement in the crucifixion.

The New Testament tells of the conviction of Jesus by the Sanhedrin, the Jewish court of the time, in the crime of claiming himself as a false prophet. After his conviction, the New Testament states Jesus was transferred to the hands of the Roman high console, Pontius Pilate who sentenced him to death by crucifixion under the charge of mutiny against the Roman Empire.

As mentioned above, it is not clear how much of the story is based in facts, nor how much was there actual active involvement of the Jews in the death of Jesus Christ.

This tale of the Jews responsible for the death of Jesus was one of the founding stones of the classical anti-Semitism, and in the name of vengeance many Jews were killed throughout history.

In conclusion, some tales connect the Jews to the death of Jesus Christ, but there can be found no substantial evidence to such occurrences, the accusation against the Jews did in fact bring many recorded incidents of violent acts against Jews.

At Jesus' trial Pilate was scared because his wife had been suffering all day with a 'dream' about Jesus. She told Pilate not to have anything to do with this man.

It was the Jews who brought Jesus to trial and it was a Jew who betrayed him.

Pilate then was stuck between a rock and a hard place - he had to show that he was in charge but did not really want to kill Jesus. But if he did not sentence Jesus the Jews could have rioted and that would not have look good back in Rome.

He let the people decide by using the custom at the Passover feast to release a prisoner.

So the choice was release Barabbas or Jesus. The People including the Scribes and Pharisees who were Jews chose to release Barabbas committing Jesus to death.

The Old Testament was initially the law of Mosses - that is the first 5 books of the Bible - or as the Jews call it the Torah.

My opinion of the whole story is this - The Jews believed in the law of Mosses and lead their lives by it. But it was a very ritualistic law, but never the less was given to Mosses by God.

They thought more of the rituals, placing them as works which they thought would get them closer to God and also boasted about these when doing them.

God warned them that if they did not follow these laws correctly they would be cursed - see history, holocaust etc...

Prophets were sent to the Jews to warn them - see the prophets books of the Bible - but they did not listen, so God delivered them into the hands of the Babylonians etc...

The prophets also predicted the coming of a Messiah - and when he came in the form of Jesus they killed him because he preached a way to God through repentance, love and baptism, not rituals and works which the Jews so boastfully practiced.

The Jews are Gods chosen people, they still are today.

They did not listen to God when he gave them the law of Mosses.

They did not listen to the prophets warnings in times of old.

They did not listen to Jesus when he came to them, not changing the law but extending it to all not just the Jews.

And until they hear the words of the prophets who say that Jesus will return if only they accept Jesus then this world will continue to get worse until they do.

answer: Jews didn't kill Jesus. Nothing about the NT is accurate, especially the trial. Romans would NEVER have caved to Jews. They ran the Jews. That would be like you telling the President to do something.

    1) if you alledge that the "OT" was man made, than it isn't a very suitable foundation for ... everything leading up to jesus, now is it?

    2) Jesus was not killed by the jews, he was killed by the romans.

    3) you really think that the jews could manipulate the roman empire?

    4) you really think the romans were reluctant to kill someone? have you considered that perhaps some time in the middle ages, when the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH was running things, that they would tweak the story so the ROMANS would not look so bad?

    5) even if the jews HAD killed him, it was merited as he had broken several death-penalty evoking laws, according to CHRISITAN belief! (some christians attribute some pretty nasty blasphemy to jesus...)

  • 1 decade ago

Well that's the usual position taken by traditional anti-semites, but in fact the Romans didn't need encouragement of any kind to do away with troublemakers. Don't forget that it would only be some 70 years later that the Romans did away with the Jews as well.

don't believe what anyone, including your brother, tells you. just read the texts. then read serious research about these issues and make your own mind up.

read up on the way the roman empire killed dissidents and how they did not allow local governments to execute people...

read up on hate that's spread through questions such as yours.
