What are the chances of being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan if I join the Navy or Air Force?

I'm 23 years old and trying to decide if I should enlist in the military. I'm really looking for a lot of info about joining but I'd trust the info more from somebody who has nothing to gain from my enlistment, so I haven't talked with a recruiter yet.

Also I was wondering how signing bonuses work. I know the amounts probably differ from branch to branch, but do you receive them in one lump sum, included in your pay over a certain time, etc?

I've been in the Navy for almost 3 years now and I can almost guarantee you if you join the Navy, no matter what your rate (job) is, you will get deployed. As far as going to Iraq or Afghanistan, it is a very high possibility. The way IA (individual augmentee) tours are going right now, alot of people are getting selected to go. My friend who has the same job as me (an IT specialist) got selected to go IA for a year to Iraq. He is already back now. In the future, there has been talks about making IA tours mandatory as part of your sea/shore rotation. I hope this helps.

Air Force has changed now. I just got in 8 months ago and pretty much everyone gets deployed now. My cycle starts next September but I am excited although nervous. My job is a photographer so it should be interesting. don't believe anyone that tells you Air Doesn'tt get deployed. that may have been the case back then but now in a way we're trying to be like the army except the deployments are not as long. (4-6) months. What job are you trying to go for? Navy i think you guys deploy and stay on a boat but im not sure. Bonuses are given when you complete all the training of the MOS you got a bonus for. I didn'tt get anything cause my job wasn'tt a big necessityy.

i believe you get signing bonuses through your pay check in large chunks. probably dependent on how big your bonus is.

when considering deployments, just assume you will be sent out no matter what your job is. if you're a developmental engineer officer in the air force, chances are you won't be sent out at all, but will you be ok being sent out at all? that's why i decided against becoming an Air Force Officer. Sure, as an engineer, i'd probably just work behind the desk my entire career, but could i leave my wife and kids behind for 6 months if i was deployed? and how often would i do that? would i be ok missing their birthdays? would i be ok missing holidays? in the end, it wasn't missing these things, but it was more about my wife and i not knowing if we'd be able to talk to each other. say i was gone for 6 months, and my son lost a tooth, or started kindergarten or whatever. who will she get to talk to? who is she going to get excited with? when will i finally get to be excited with her? i didn't want to miss that, and i didn't want to miss her, so i didn't sign up. a lot of people will think that's stupid, but my family comes first.

right now, many many service men and women are being deployed to the middle east. there is a very good chance if you enlisted now, that you'd be sent out after your training was over.

If you join the Navy or Air force your chances of being sent to Afgahn and Iraq are slim. It depends on what your job is though. Most services are not giving away the signing bonuses anymore. The only way you will get a bonus by joining the Navy is if you go in Seals, SWCC, or you get a nuclear job. The best thing to do though is to talk to a recruiter.

in case you do no longer opt to combat, do no longer connect. All branches deploy. Even the Coast shelter has deployed. The army has greater sailors in Iraq then on ships interior the Persian Gulf. The Air rigidity bases their planes in Iraq. Even some government jobs deploy, State branch is over there. In reconstruction communities they have human beings from branch of Agriculture, branch of preparation, branch of skill etc to help prepare Iraqis and Afghans the thank you to run those applications. As for the armed forces reserves, they deploy too. no longer as many times through fact the lively duty human beings, yet they are interior the combat too.

Fairly high since Obama is sending 30,000 troops out to Afghanistan and maybe even an additional couple thousand in the near future.

Army has by far the largest signing bonus.

If you enlist in Army or Marines you will be deployed, but then again its alot cooler then being a butt pirate or a grease monkey working on a plane.
