Did anyone hear Joe Rogan say that UFC fighters hands are not as good as boxers?

when watching a recent ufc show on spike tv, i was frankly surprised to hear joe rogan say that mma fighters hands are "not there yet" as far as matching up with a good boxer. i was somewhat surprised to hear this because, as a martial artist as well as a boxer, i get severely criticized by mma fanatics when i say the same thing. even at his peak, chuck liddell was a sloppy puncher that would not strike fear into the heart of even a 44 year old bernard hopkins. a guy on this very board suggested that sean sherk would whip floyd mayweather even in a boxing only match. uh, okay.

Quite honestly I would think that a boxer would have better hands than the majority of UFC fighters, and mma fighters. Mma fighters in a boxing match would fail against a boxer any day, because stand up isn't everything in mma, and quite little actually. All a boxer does is work his stand up and his hands, whereas mma is mixed martial arts, which means judo, bjj, muay thai, etc. They aren't as well equiped with their hands. This being said, a boxer would lose in a mma fight anyday, because with zero takedown defense, even the biggest guy could get taken down and submitted easily. They are two different sports, fights in the UFC usually last 5 minutes for 3 rounds, and I know some boxers that will go 13 rounds with you. Comparing them isn't really fair, but I would have to agree with Rogan on this one.

Boxers do have better hands. I would even go so far as to say that on the majority, their combinations are sloppy and poorly set up. The hand work nor kickboxing is not really smooth or dynamic in most cases.

However, I think if a boxer tried mma it would be a debacle. Sloppy MMA hand work passes because the dynamics and style are so much different. Cro Cop has to change his style for MMA when he crossed over from K1. I am sure the same rules would apply for a boxer into MMA and vice versa. Pick the best striker in MMA, any organization... compare him to Maywether.........

Boxing is more of a specialized sport than MMA. I would say that Taekuan do and boxing are very similar if only in regard to being total opposites.

A boxer is designed to be a striker, the art of striking is what a boxer is all about. To suggest that MMA fighters who (if they want to last) spend a vast amount of training in ground defense and grappling have boxing hands is just silly. Personally I think dedicating your skill to striking is a horrible idea in MMA. Anthony Johnson was clearly the better striker then Koscheck and then he lost because KOS just took him down. Roy Nelson, holy cow he sucks at striking. He couldn't knock some one out that was unconscious. He's in the Ultimate FIghter Finale.

People who says MMA fighters are better strikers then boxers are just insecure by the fact that boxing is still a popular sport. Pacman vs Mayweather may be the only thing to hope for these days though.

I think boxers are definitely better with their hands than MMA fighters in general, but it's not just because boxers only train punching and MMA fighters train in everything, but because boxers don't have to worry about anything other than punches and they have boxing shoes for good traction to push off the ground. MMA fighters have to worry about leg kicks, high kicks, knees, clinches, and take-downs so they are a lot more hesitant with their striking. MMA fighters also fight without shoes so they have to worry about slipping when jumping in and out of combos. Maybe one day we will get to see how far away MMA is with Boxing when Anderson Silva is allowed to box with Roy Jones Jr, but until then we can only speculate on exactly how much better boxers are at punching than MMA fighters.

LOL Boxing does not work in a real fight. I think its a great sport! But do you really think that Hopkins employing his turtle defense will strike fear in Chuck Liddle? He would get slammed!! Boxers have these heavily padded gloves that allows them to punch each other hundreds of times!!! Can you get away with that in MMA? Usually HElL NO!!!!

They are 2 different sports plain and simple! Learning to Box does help U in a real fght but you can also get into kickboxing or Karate.

Tyson was a ONE trick pony and I doubt he would strike fear into someone like Machida or Fedor. Either of them would just take him down and breack off a limb or something. Machida has fought a world class kickboxer before and beat him without breaking a sweat.

Anybody with working eyes can see that pro MMA punching is far below pro boxer pugilism. Don't listen to he MMA fanatics, they just think that MMA is everything. In time they will learn that it is just a fight sport.

I wish Mike Tyson would get in there. Yes. At his age now. The older, road rage Mike Tyson. I bet he'd knock a few guys out.

yeah he did say that, and for the most part it's true. MMA fighters hands aren't as good as boxers, simply because all boxers do is work on their punches. MMA fighters have to have everything punches, kicks, knees, elbows, takedowns, takedown defense, submission, ground fighting, ect ect ect

well training in both muay thai and boxing i agree with you stand up is only part of the battle in mma you have the clinch and the ground game also to worry about. MMA and boxing are different styles my blocking and stance let alone fighting styles. in boxing i hate the inside game in muay thai i love it just cause of the clinch. im a south paw in both but in muay thai my left hand is down toward my chest where in boxing its up by my neck

im sure their not and i dont think they should either i love mma but the padding on their gloves is nowhere near as padded as boxing gloves and still ppl have died in the boxing ring no one has died in mma yet id like to keep it that way
