Selling religion.... can you sell yours?
If someone of another faith came to your door - lets say a Jehovah's witness. And they wanted to convert you to their religion... would you listen to them past the phrase "Hello, i'm here to tell you about my great religion..."? Would you...
So how are **you*** going to someone else's door, website or question/answer area going to convert anyone? If you're doing the same thing with the same results, you expect different results because you have something different to sell? I'm just trying to understand the psychology behind this, that's all....

I am a Christian, one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Our commission or commandment from Jesus Christ is to tell the good news of the Kingdom, and we do it.
If you read the Bible you will see that every time God was to destroy a people, a city or what have you, he sent someone to warn the people. There were times when they actually listened so God didn't go through with it. But, this time it won't be that way. There is a separation going on, and whether a person believes or not is of no matter. But since a person's life, yours, is at stake don't you think it is worthwhile to check it out? After all it is your life!
It would be so easy to just sit back, knowing what we know and wait, but we don't. It is a loving thing we do, but most of all it's like I said, our commission to do it.
If you don't listen to us at the door, that's perfectly fine with us, although we may feel sorry for you but we are searching for those with a heart condition that wants to serve Jehovah. We just plant the seed, He makes it grow.
But how will someone know if they want to serve Jehovah if someone doesn't tell them about him? That's where we come in.

Let me say this one more time; Jehovah's Witnesses do NOT try to convert anyone. We simply provide the information from the Bible of the impending destruction of the world's religions and then it's governments. Any who are in anyway associated with either, face destruction, also. I have grown children and grandchildren who need this information, too. I talk about God's promises with them, just as I would anyone else. I don't argue with them about these things, just as I wouldn't argue with any of you, because YOU have to make your own choice whether to serve Jehovah or not. We also tell people we talk to about how they will benefit from worshiping Jehovah God.
Maybe I can illustrate my point this way: Say I live in your neighborhood, and one day, I noticed what appears to be brake fluid under your vehicle. I knock on your door and tell you about it. You tell me you just had your car serviced and you don't believe there is anything seriously wrong with it. The next day, I knock again, and you tell me you trust your mechanic did a through check when he serviced the car and I shouldn't worry, and if I bother you again, you're going to get angry. Finally, I give up and don't bother you again. Two days later, You have a serious accident, while driving with your family to the mall. Who's to blame? Me, because I didn't try harder to force you to get your car checked out, your mechanic because he should have caught the problem, or you, because you ignored not only the warning, but the clear evidence that there was a problem?
We supply people with everything they need to make an informed choice. We also give them clear evidence that what we say is true, as it comes from God's Word. This evidence also exposes the world's religions for what they really are, false teachers. Is not your life, and that of your family, important enough to at least investigate what we have to say?
Edit: Surprise, surprise! There are those here who actually take the word sell, literally! You CAN 'sell' yourself, and never get a dime. Just as you can 'sell' your beliefs, and still retain them. Come on people, get a clue!

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (ie Mormon's LDS). We send out missionaries in hope to let others understand that Christ's Church from ancient times have been restored upon the earth. I don't consider it selling my religion, since I was once a missionary although I didn't serve in American, I served in Japan, where the culture is so different from the one here in the USA. As for the psychology of it, image you have an amazing story and you know if you tell it to someone it can help them and possible save them, but even though you go from door to door, most close the door in your face while a very select few, open it and allow you to tell it. After that, only a handful of people actually believe. Honestly, it was very hard going from door to door asking for people to just take the time to listen, but when they did, it made me feel like I accomplished something good and that I could help them.
I do hope this helps you!

I've had the door to door evangelists...
I usually debate with them for a bit.
they usually do not come back for quite some time.
personally Judaism does not try to convert people, and I am not sure I could follow a belief system that felt the need to convert others as some do.

You mean evangelism and not Evangelicalism. One is a performance of a duty and the other is an approach to Bible study. Not all Christians are hyper-soul-winners. I'm not. I believe what I believe for definitive reasons and I'm happy to share what I believe with anyone who asks. I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to all who believe. It is because of this fact, however, that sharing my beliefs with people is so important. You mention commandments. What is the use of commandments if the person commanded has no knowledge of Who is giving the command? Many people think they know a lot about God, and they think they have Him pretty well figured out. They are wrong, and it is of the utmost importance that people understand just Who He is, what He's about, and what His plans are, which He has made known to us. There are many callings in the Bible, but this, the spreading of the Gospel, which is literally GOOD NEWS, is the highest calling of the born-again saint.

I invite the witnesses and the Mormons all in. I sit down and spend a lot of time listening to them. Then they listen to me. Some do. Not a lot come since they see my Virgin Mary grotto at the front door, but some brave it.
I'm not selling a product. I'm talking about a free gift I received, Jesus Christ and all that comes with Him, because I wish for everyone to have it.

I believe in attraction rather than promotion. Plus the religion has to be validated by a proper understanding of Holy text, withstand scruitiny, traditions, supported by scholarship and academics in different disciplines, doctrine, dogmas and martyrs and saints.
My belief came to me by Revelation and I wouldn't know how to sell that gift. I did take courses on apologetics so I can argue on it's behalf - most know very little about the subject and they rely on opinion as presented by a tainted media - pulling every irritating personality they can find to put in front of a camera.
Using the Jehovah's Witnesses as an example is not a very good one. They fail to include the most important items of faith in there belief, they are a cult and anyone who knows their theology can destroy their understanding of scripture. God bless them.
You can't tell people what to believe only share your experience.

Well The Jehovah's believe in spreading God's word, and they are strongly convinced that there God is real, that being the case there is no doubt in there mind that helping save other's is a bad idea. I am Christian and I will recomend my religion to any person wanting help or advice, but I do not have it imprinted in my mind to go from door to door asking people to join. Although I forgot what part of the bible it is in where it is recomended to do as the Jehova's do know, and go from door to door.

Its just like when you feel there is a problem that needs attention such as more and more cases of people dying from cancer so you want to help and make a difference to save lives so you may represent an organization and go door to door askign people to donate to sponsor cancer research.
In the case of religous people like myself (islam), you want to save people's lives but in a "spiritual" way so that after a person dies, they are aware of what their outcome can be based on thier deeds in this life so it becomes a moral obligation to open the ears and eyes of those who may not be aware of the reality and purpose of life.

I wouldn't sell mine. I would just sit back and let those who wanted to come come. Since mine would be actually superior, there wouldn't be any problem in gettin people to come.
Let's see....how does that saying go? If u make the better mouse trap, then people will beat a path to your door. Somethin like that anyhow.
