What other squash is similar to butternut squash?
Store doesn't carry it & I want to make baked "fries" using squash. Anyone have a recipe they can share?
Okay, the store does have it!

I'm surprised they don't. Butternut is very common. It's tan and sort of light bulb shaped. But anyway, most winter squashes taste pretty much alike, except spaghetti squash which is stringy. The important thing for your recipe is that you have to peel it. Acorn squash is impossible to peel. Try a small hubbard, or a buttercup, or even a delicata.
Peel and cut your squash into pieces and toss them in a bowl with a little oil and salt and pepper. I like ground cumin too. Spread them on a roasting pan and bake them at 400 degrees until soft and lightly browned. They can burn quickly. I use 2 x 2 inch chunks and start checking after 30 minutes.

Acorn Squash and Sweet Potato fries! Acorn squash taste and look just like butternut. Theyre sweeter though.
Acorn Squash
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.
Use a vegetable peeler and peel the squash. Cut it in half and scoop out all the seeds. Slice up the squash into 1/2 inch thick-ish slices, Slice them again if you want them in a more fry-style shape.
Spray a cookie sheet with non-stick spray, put the squash on the pan and sprinkle with the salt.
Bake for 35-40 minutes or till they get a lil browned.
These ended up tasting allot like regular potato fries, not all sweet like sweet potato fries.

Sweet Potato

1/2 teaspoon(s) ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
1/4 teaspoon(s) ground red pepper
1 tablespoon(s) vegetable oil
2 large (about 1 1/2 pounds) sweet potatoes
1. Prepare the sweet potatoes: In a small bowl, combine cumin, salt, and pepper. Set aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Peel potatoes, cut each in half lengthwise, and cut each half into 6 wedges. In a large bowl, combine the cut potatoes, oil, and spice mixture. Toss until potatoes are evenly coated.
2. Bake the fries: On a baking sheet, arrange potatoes in a single layer and place on the middle shelf of the oven. Bake until edges are crisp and potatoes are cooked through -- about 30 minutes. Serve immediately.

They are not squash, but I always thought Yams or Sweet Potatoes were a similar texture and taste. You can make savory dishes or even pies out of all 3 too.

There is acorn squash but you can't make fries out of it. I think you are thinking of sweet potato fries. Sorry I don't have a recipe.
