Is it wrong to be a skeptic to religious people?

It seems that a lot of religious people don't like the fact that atheists are basically skeptics of religion. So why don't they believe in Bigfoot, or Nessie or any other cyrptid out there? Or is being skeptical of a deity more wrong than being skeptical of cryptids and alien visitations to Earth?

Update:

Deer - No, since if I was theistic I would be intelligent enough to know that my deity would not have a lot of hard fact to back it up.

Jim - I do, I question it and look for answers. I'm skeptical of everything. I believe most atheists are as well.

There is nothing wrong with being skeptical, in fact the best of us are. To mindlessly accept religion is a bad thing, and if one chooses to be religious it should be from their own convictions, not out of a mechanically learned behavior.

It shows individuality and confidence to be skeptical, particularily so if you do not give up on asking questions.

im all for being a skeptic... otherwise you don't know what you believe in. What bothers me are those who won't look at other views with an open mind... I may not agree with your views but i'll hear them out... ya know?

Im thankful that there are those who are skeptical out there because there are a lot of false religions.

I remember going to a Christian high school and being urged to develop a habit of "spiritual reading", meaning to occasionally read and meditate on a book by some respectable literary authority of my faith. We were also cautioned to be careful in our reading not to be seduced by "unwholesome" authors who might potentially undermine our faith. Any doctrinally controversial books were to be approached rarely, with critical vigilance, and with the close consultation of our personal spiritual directors.

By college, I was expected to have internalized the critical faculties to make sound judgments about unrestrained doctrinal discussions. But there are always moments of uncertainty. One has to be exposed to a new idea, to its roots and its purposes, to understand it from as close to the inside as an outsider can get, in order to effectively reject it. Too much exposure and one may be seduced. Too little exposure and one remains naive. It's a religiously dangerous position to be in, and most religious leader prefer to keep their faithful flock away from it. There is a reason Jesus reputedly encouraged childlike, unquestioning faith. Or to put it another way, "Ignorance is bliss."

But what I have learned is that to know B.S., it helps to have lived in it for a while. While I examine a new idea, I am also examining my own time-worn assumptions, and I always have the option to reject both. There are far more things in the human imagination that are not true than are true. You can only gain perspective if you allow your background to shift once in a while.

advantageous, maximum something is a risk. The greater considerable query is- do you opt to be sure? you could. See the Bible I John 5:13 "those issues I write to you, which you will understand which you have everlasting lifestyles" See Hebrews 11:a million "Now faith is being advantageous of what we are hoping for and specific of what we don't see" basically Christianity is clever adequate to place your faith in Jesus Christ-all different 'faiths' require you to enable bypass of various stages of rationality and to overlook approximately specific quantities of info and journey that's specific that Christians are incorrect approximately specific factors of Christian information and comments even inspite of the shown fact that that's the two specific that Christians are not incorrect appropriate to the lifestyles of God and salvation by Jesus Christ in case you relatively have an open innovations and are keen to maintain on with the info no rely the place it leads, you will locate the fact. take care

It's not wrong at all to be a skeptic. But wouldn't you be a bit offended if you believed in an all-powerful being, and someone compared it to Bigfoot?

  • Skepticism is the beginning of questioning. Anything that cannot stand up to question, must be questioned what it can stand up to.

    Perspective is everything...

Fair-minded scepticism is fine. Its closed mindedness, cynicism and arrogance that annoy me. Unfortunately a lot of the atheists on here tend towards the latter and are just as dogmatic as any fundamentalists.

Skepticism is always good and should be applied to everything.

I used to be very skeptical of religious people, to the point of avoidance. This was a good thing because it encouraged me to read the scriptures and try to prove them wrong. Well, it had the opposite effect. The more I read the scriptures, the more I understand the Lord and His gospel. So, sometimes questioning something is a good thing.

better question, why is it wrong for us to be skeptics but they are skeptical of every other religion but theirs.
