Carb adjustment for a Techumseh small engine(snowblower)?

I did a little pre winter maintenance on my snow blower. I took out the old sparkplug and it was black. I took it to get a new one and the man told me he thought my fuel was burning too rich. I am assuming I am getting too much fuel and not enough air. I took apart the housing and got to the carb. There are two spring loaded screws. The problem is I don't know which one to turn and which way to turn it. I don't have the manual because I bought it from a friend. I am a handyman and do everything on my own but when it comes to engines I am a little uneducated. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

One is " L" low speed adjustment and one i marked "H" for high speed.

Slowly screw the L in to bottom, (lightly) and count the turns. Turn back out 1 -3/4 turns.

Turn the H screw in and seat (lightly), and then turn back 2 turns.

Start the engine. Won't start? Remove the plug and add 1/2 teaspoon of gasoline, (or mix if it is a 2 cycle).

Start the engine. Adjust the L screw until the engine idles smoothly.

Rev the engine to fast and adjust the H screw. Turn it in slowly until it starts to miss and then turn it out until is stumbles and then turn it 1/2 way btwn miss and stumble.

Engine needs to be warmed up when making final adjustments.

Do you have the owners manual for the bike? What does the troubleshooting section say? If it performs the way you describe, you may have more than a carburetor problem. If you don't have the owners manual or shop manual, set the throttle in the middle setting and see how it runs with the engine hot and then cold. Does it change or stay the same? If it runs the same with the engine hot or cold then it could be the carburetor, but if it changes then it's something else. When my bike ran badly uphill it was because one of the spark plugs wasn't sparking, not because of the carburetor. Your bike SHOULD start on the first try almost all the time unless it's really cold out or there's something wrong. I recommend taking it to a shop and seeing what the mechanic tells you. It's nice to be able to work on your bike yourself, but it really SUCKS to screw up your bike because you think you can work on it yourself if you really can't.

Turn both the low and high all the way down clockwise.

Then turn the low about 1 and a 1/4 rounds counterclockwise.

After that turn the high fuel adjust screw about 2 turns and tweak them until your motor sounds better and performs better.
