Mark Benson considering retirement! So does this show the Review-System makes the umpires feel "insignificant"?

Mark Benson is planning to retire from umpiring with immediate effect following his sudden withdrawal from the Adelaide Test. The Sunday Times have reported Benson was upset over several incidents involving the Umpire Decision Review System on day one of the second Test between Australia and West Indies, one of which led to his original decision being overturned.

Is the review system putting the umpires under "pressure" instead of helping them?

Benson can't have things his own way so he's retiring. He's just being a big old prima donna and throwing his toys out the pram because he's afraid that he's going to be shown up to be the poor umpire that he is. Boo hoo.

I'm not a fan of the review system at all, it takes away a big part of the game (some of the on field decision making) that should be left down to the umpires to decide upon. Plus it gives far too much power to everyone except the umpires who should be in charge (whether they make an error or not). But as it's now, and obviously, a part of the game (and it's here to stay) then people should accept it, whether they like it or not. And that goes for fans and umpires alike.

Especially the umpires who's job it is to make sure there are no errors in their performances. If they're any good then they will not be too bothered by the technology at all because it will support them and their decision making. The only ones who are overly bothered are the rubbish umpires.

But I guess that's one good thing about the review system, it'll weed out the poor umpires so that only the good remain.

I don't see how the review system could possibly be putting pressure on the umpires. If anything they should be more relaxed in the knowledge that if they make a bad call it will probably not influence the result of a test match (it still could if a team doesn't use their reviews properly but at least it's not solely the umpire's fault then).

Benson has been a poor umpire, and his failings hace been shown up by the Review System. Good umpires will not feel so pressurised, as they will get more decisions right than wrong. Mark Benson is a fool, who once had to leave the field when playing for Kent back in the early 90's (or was it the late 80's?) because he had sunstroke!

Ponting could replace him as an umpire, as he clearly feels he can do a better job.

Before the match, two umpires shall be appointed, one for each end, to control the game as required by the Laws, with absolute impartiality.

The Review-System will see no more on field umpires within 5 years.

The game of Cricket has been governed by a series of Codes of Law for over 250 years.

These Codes have been subject to additions and alterations recommended by the governing authorities of the time.

Since its formation in 1787, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has been recognised as the sole authority for drawing up the Code and for all subsequent amendments. The Club also holds the World copyright.

The basic Laws of Cricket have stood remarkably well the test of well over 250 years of playing the game. It is thought the real reason for this is that cricketers have traditionally been prepared to play in the Spirit of the Game as well as in accordance with the Laws.

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsbility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains.

THE REVIEW-SYSTEM WILL DESTORY THE GAME.

Umpires are human just like YOU & me, they make mistakes as well as us.

IT called part of the game.

Well, like he said, he has a family, and WWE Superstars are on the road around 300 days a year. I don't see why anybody with a family would want to have a schedule like that. I like the breakthrough that he's made this past year, but if he decides to retire and spend time with his family, then I say good for him.

  • Actually due to referral system, umpires have less role in decision making and maybe Benson considers that there is no more his need to cricket. Yes this system makes them feel insignificant.
