R&P: Lyrically what's the best song you have EVER heard. (Lyrically not musically)?
I'll post my pick at the end unless someone picks the same one. Curious to see your picks first.
Feel free to include lyrics or a link to them.
Oh sorry, only ONE pick per person. One best song (Lyrically). That keeps it fair.
I have to say, although someone picked the song I had picked to be the answer, Hugh Jordan: You almost made me change my mind Thrasher is one of my favorite songs, and it is because of the lyrics. Thrasher and Last Resort (Eagles) (no one picked) would be my two very close seconds to the Best Answer.
Cowboy Neal - You also impressed me with TVZ. One of the best singer songwriters hands down.
Lep - That JP song is excellent, I love that not everyone went with singer songwriters in the question.
Raymond - Roxy Music! Kudos to you.
Smiley - Frank Zappa is a genius, musically and lyrically!!! Great choice.
Once again, you guys at R&P have proved me wrong. I thought I could pick one song that was lyrically superior....but you guys picked so many I hadn't even considered and make it very hard to pick a best answer.

Bob Dylan - The Times they are A-changing
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

'Thrasher' by Neil Young
THRASHER by Neil Young
--------
They were hiding behind hay bales,
They were planting in the full moon
They had given all they had for something new
But the light of day was on them,
They could see the thrashers coming
And the water shone like diamonds in the dew.
And I was just getting up, hit the road before it's light
Trying to catch an hour on the sun
When I saw those thrashers rolling by,
Looking more than two lanes wide
I was feelin' like my day had just begun.
Where the eagle glides ascending
There's an ancient river bending
Down the timeless gorge of changes
Where sleeplessness awaits
I searched out my companions,
Who were lost in crystal canyons
When the aimless blade of science
Slashed the pearly gates.
It was then I knew I'd had enough,
Burned my credit card for fuel
Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand
With a one-way ticket to the land of truth
And my suitcase in my hand
How I lost my friends I still don't understand.
They had the best selection,
They were poisoned with protection
There was nothing that they needed,
Nothing left to find
They were lost in rock formations
Or became park bench mutations
On the sidewalks and in the stations
They were waiting, waiting.
So I got bored and left them there,
They were just deadweight to me
Better down the road without that load
Brings back the time when I was eight or nine
I was watchin' my mama's T.V.,
It was that great Grand Canyon rescue episode.
Where the vulture glides descending
On an asphalt highway bending
Thru libraries and museums, galaxies and stars
Down the windy halls of friendship
To the rose clipped by the bullwhip
The motel of lost companions
Waits with heated pool and bar.
But me I'm not stopping there,
Got my own row left to hoe
Just another line in the field of time
When the thrashers comes, I'll be stuck in the sun
Like the dinosaurs in shrines
But I'll know the time has come
To give what's mine.
EDIT- Great call on "Last Rose of Summer"- one of my favorite Priest songs- and Sin After Sin is my fave JP album.

In terms of Rock, I was going to say a song by Bob Dylan. (Hadn't decided which) But since he's been mentioned a few times, I'll say Modest Mouse - White Lies, Yellow Teeth.

Overall, I would agree with Nexx Jordan, in that lyrically Theives in the Night is the best. Although, I prefer Respiration.

In the Real World- Roy Orbison...
or Behind blue Eyes by the Who, but I wanted to be original..
In dreams we do so many things
We set aside the rules we know
And fly the world so high
In great and shining rings
If only we could always live in dreams
If only we could make of life
What, in dreams, it seems
But in the real world
We must say our goodbyes
No matter if the love will live
It will never die
In the real world
There are things that we can't change
And endings come to us
In ways that we can't rearrange
I love you, and you love me
But sometimes we must let it be
In the real world
In the real world
When we were dreaming heart to heart
I wish that we had stayed right there
For when the dreamers do awake
The dreams do disappear
In the real world
There are things that we can't change
And endings come to us
In ways that we can't rearrange
I love you, and you love me
But sometimes we must let it be
In the real world
In the real world

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-uc9poLg0c&feature...
While riding on a train goin' west
I feel asleep for take my a rest
I dreamed a dream that make me sad
Concerning myself and the first few friends I had.
With half-damp eyes I stared to the room
Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon
Where we together weathered many a storm
Laughin' and singing 'till the early hours of the morn'.
By the old wooden stove where our hats was hung
Our words were told, our songs were songs
Where we longed for nothin' and were satisfied
Joking and talking about the world outside.
With haunted hearts through the heat and cold
We never thought we could ever get very old
We thought we could sit forever in fun
Our chances really was a million to one.
As easy it was to tell black from white
It was all that easy to tell wrong from right
And our choices they were few and the thought never hit
That the one road we traveled would ever shatter and split.
How many a year has passed and gone
Many a gamble has been lost and won
And many a road taken by many a first friend
And each one I've never seen again.
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
That we could sit simply in that room again
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat
I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.
take care

Rumors Of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated by Rise Against
"When I die, will they remember not what I did, but what I haven't done? It's not the end that I fear with each breath; it's life that scares me to death. When we build these dreams on sand, how they all slip through our hands, and this might be our only chance. Let's take this one day at a time, I'll hold your hand if you hold mine; the time that we kill keeps us alive."

In Every Dream Home, a Heartache - Roxy Music
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSniBxXjK_8
In every dream home a heartache
And every step I take
Takes me further from heaven
Is there a heaven?
I`d like to think so
Standards of living
They are rising daily
But home oh sweet home
It only a saying
From bell push to faucet
In smart town apartment
The cottage is pretty
The main house a palace
Penthouse perfection
But what goes on
What to do there
Better pray there
Open plan living
Bungalow ranch style
All of it's comforts
Seem so essential
I bought you mail order
My plain wrapper baby
Your skin is like vinyl
The perfect companion
You float in my new pool
Deluxe and delightful
Inflatable doll
My role is to serve you
Disposable darling
Can't throw you away now
Immortal and life size
My breath is inside you
I'll dress you up daily
And keep you till death sighs
Inflatable doll
Lover ungrateful
I blew up your body...
But you blew my mind
Oh Those Heartaches
Dreamhome Heartaches

My choice would be Schism by Tool. I'm amazed by it's lyrics everytime I listen to it.
''I know the pieces fit, cause I watched them fall away,
Mildewed and smoldering,
Fundamental differing,
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers' souls in motion,
Disintegrating as it goes, testing our communication,
The light that fueled our fire then, has burned a hole between us
So, we cannot seem to reach an end, crippling our communication.
I know the pieces fit, cause I watched them tumble down,
No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire to,
Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over,
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication.
The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it,
Finding beauty in the dissonance.
There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away,
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting,
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing,
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication.
Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion.
Between supposed lovers.
Between supposed brothers.
I know the pieces fit.
I know the pieces fit...''

Lyrically speaking, ^^^^ those two verses describe all the political songs that came after the 9/11 attacks...
I'm still thinking about who i would nominate, i've gone through my playlist twice, i'll decide soon enough.
Edit: Road To Zion, by Damien Marley and Nas.
