Why No Hot Showers while Pregnant?

Im 34 weeks pregnant Now, But I remember some of the first things I was Told when i went in...Dont eat cold lunch meat, No aspirin, Dont change cat litter boxes...And NO HOT SHOWERS.

I was just wondering the other day, while i was taking my warm shower, wishing it was steamy hott...."Why cant it be hott?".

Anyways I asked my Friend who was recently pregnant and she didnt know...But her mother said The Heat from it Will Make the baby Mentally Retarded!!!!

I just want to know...Is she right? If not, Then WHAT DOES IT DO?

(dont worry, I dont plan on taking a hott shower, I waited this long, I can wait 6 more weeks! lol)

Hot showers are fine. It's hot submersions - bath, hottubs, and excessive long heat like a sauna that can exert undue stress. In the first trimester, if your core body temperature rises above 102 degrees, it can lead to neural tube defects (defects of the brain and spine). All the other concerns about excessive heat relate to dehydration. You'd have to live in a really hot shower to get your body temperature anywhere near 102 and/or get dehydrated. =) If you're keeping hydrated normally throughout the day, you should be fine.

I think they are meaning like dont go in saunas or hot tubs. Because it can raise your temp really high and harm the baby. Hot showers are ok. Just make sure you leave the bathroom door cracked or a window cracked so you can get some kind of ventalation. I know when I was pregnant with my daughter there was a couple times I would get light headed because there was to much steam in the bathroom. Maybe that is why they told you not to take hot showers. But I dont see there is anything wrong with it. I mean we have to do something to relax. They also say that taking a hot bath can cause early contractions. But I took a hot bath every week when I was pregnant with my daughter and had no problems. I got told at my first appointment. No deli meat (only packaged), no asprin, dont change the cat litter box, you only can have so much caffine, and no hot tubs or saunas. Plus my doctor gave me a list of meds that were safe to take and for what symptoms. It was really helpful. But good luck with your pregnancy!!

That's ridiculous lol... you can take a hot shower... You're not allowed to be submerged in hot water such as a bath or a jacuzzi because your internal temperature raises and it can cause the amniotic fluid to get too warm which will damage the baby's brain cells (much like the way having a high fever would)... but you can take a hot shower... you're only in the shower for what, 10 minutes? It's not going to hurt anything.

I went through my whole pregnancy taking hot showers and my baby turned out just fine.

As relaxing as long, steamy showers or a soak in a hot tub can be when your body is feeling the aches and pains of pregnancy, it's best to avoid becoming overheated. Raising your body temperature above 102° Fahrenheit (38.9° Celsius) increases the risk for neural tube defects in the first trimester and dehydration later in the pregnancy.

So try to limit activities that could raise your core temperature too much, including:

    * using saunas or hot tubs

    * taking hot, long baths or showers

    * becoming overheated when outside in hot weather or when exercising

Instead of hot tubs or saunas, take a dip in a cool pool. Try to stick to warm or only slightly hot baths and showers. And follow your body's cues that you're getting overheated when exercising or enjoying the outdoors. Make sure to drink plenty of cool liquids, and take a break from what you're doing so that you don't get too hot.

If you became overheated in the past, don't worry too much about it. Chances are you removed yourself from the uncomfortable situation before any damage was done.

I am now pregnant with my 2nd, and took very hot showers with the 1st and even now with the 2nd. I think hot showers is not ok for the 1st trimester because the heat can cause neural tube defects. I am 12 wks now and still take hot showers and bathes. My 1st daughter was born fine and now 15 months, shes fine. I don't listen to it, its relaxing as long as you don't get too dizzy and wanna pass out. Good luck...Your in your 3rd trimester, your fine...Good luck with the little one =)

There is a potential danger to the developing fetus if your body temperature rises above 102 degrees. Hot showers can raise your body temperature..

Usually when they mean hot baths they are talking Jacuzzis and things like that. Its harm full to the baby if your body temperature raises to high so that is where the concern lies.

When you get sick your body raises its internal temperature to try and "cook" the bacteria that is causing your illness. Well, when you're pregnant (especially early pregnancy) your body sees the embryo/fetus as another foreign object. Really hot water will raise your internal temperature and the low grade fever caused by this could kill and spontaneously abort your baby
