I recently moved to an apartment built in 1920. There's a feature in the kitchen that maybe a senior knows?

I live in southern Minnesota, USA, and although the kitchen is small, it is well-equipped. I'm wondering why the builder saw a need to place a 10" diameter hole clean through one of the shelves above the sink, with a capped-off water line beneath it, I can't imagine what original purpose this served. Some kind of reservoir or holder? The house has gas and electricity since it was built, but a few modifications have been made over the years, including a panel to cover the 'mystery' hole. Your help is appreciated. Enjoy the Holidays.

Update:

The plumbing for the sink was built around this opening in the shelf, as if there was a big purpose originally. Thank you for the chimney idea, but it doesn't seem to work, yet. The space directly above the shelf is open to the ceiling, but no covered hole, there. The shelf itself is offset slightly from the drain, about 20" above the sink.

Update 2:

When I first saw the shelf, I imagined some kind of water-heating apparatus, but would like to know 'for sure'. Thank you all, and stop by sometime!

it might have been for a hot water service, i have seen little wall mounted, gas powered ones before, in old houses that didn't have a central hot water service. It would make sense being above the sink for washing dishes etc.

10" Hole....possibly the original location of the Stove http://api.ning.com/files/Vmvw4N0wRihub*J5GfAks9On...

Possibly a gas not a water line.
