Please help me with restoring my back-up files to my laptop?

Long story short, I got screwed by Vista and then spent an entire month waiting for my free upgrade to Windows 7 to arrive. Vista's ***-raping of my BRAND NEW laptop left me able to backup my files to an external hard drive, but that was pretty much it. Now that I finally have Windows 7 installed, though, I would love to restore those back-up files to my computer. I ran the .exe file in the backup folder, but there is also an FBW file entitled Backup.2.fbw, and when I click on this, a window pops up to tell me that there's nothing the computer can do with that type of file. Meanwhile, very few of my original files are back on my computer, so I am left to assume that the rest of it is stored in this FBW file. How can I restore these files? Is there a specific program I need to download? Please help!!

Was your laptop a HP laptop? FBW files seem to be associated with a HP backup program or tool, not an actual program within Vista, although it may not have looked like that at the time. You may have to install a specific HP tool into Windows 7 to make it all work.

The other possibility is that you have to start the laptop in recovery mode and run the "Restore" tool from there. To boot up in Recovery mode look for instructions while the laptop is starting (often it's F11 to boot into recovery mode).
