Other ways to repay sins? (continuation)?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200912...

here is the previous question: many have said that if someone is agnostic/atheist, they will face damnation not because they do not follow God's path, but because they do not repay their sins by prayer etc.

my question is this: if, in theory someone does not worship god, but wishes to repay and repent for their sins by a means other than the usual methods, is helping others possible.

I ask because, though I will not worship God, i do agree with many other areas of religion, spanning over several religions, mainly Buddhism, Christianity and Baha'i. I have much reasoning for not worshiping God, but the main ones are that the world is a horrible place, and that more bad happens than good, and thus it would be sick to create such a world. also that there isn't sufficient evidence for it (though this is arguable), and the forcing of religion on others (again, debatable), and that there is much hate (i am gay, and i have had some very crude things said to me by religious people: hate and blasphemy are sins if i am correct).

anyway, my point is, is that i help many people out, i give to charity, am always willing to help someone in need, and i am always wanting to cheer someone up if they are having a bad day: my question (FINALLY lol) is, is this a form of repentance that does not involve worshipping God? basically can passage to heaven be granted by being a good and kind loving person, even though you do not actively worship a God?

I mean no offense by anything I have said in any way here: it is for my own educational benefit.

Good works is a form of prayer.

You do not have to believe in God to go to heaven, all you have to do is live a good life, examples thus; St. Otteran, Good Samaritan.

You do not have to confess "Venial Sins", which are minor indiscretions, as this will not cause you to go to hell, however - if you have committed any "Mortal Sins" such as murder, I can only advise you to confess these.

If you live a good life, and are a good person - you shall know salvation, your beliefs do not speak as loud as your actions. Take no heed of the schismatics who claim that the only path to God is belief, for they speak lies, lies that would damn the good Samaritan to hell - which is in-congruent as he was exemplified by Jesus.

I hope that helped - now go and be a good person, and if your feeling especially good convert to the one true Catholic Church - we help guide people towards the light, but we are neither necessary, nor sufficient for salvation on our own, for the works must come from YOU.

Nb: Saying sorry to the people you sinned to is a good start.

Belief without works is dead - James 2.20

You can argue however you wish.

Christianity teaches that the problem of sin is not only personal acts of wrong doing, but a sin nature and some kind of participation in original sin. That's the complication to your perspective. You assume that good acts are equivalent to countering bad acts. According to the Bible human beings need righteousness which involves positive good acts and the absence of all bad acts. This is the reason for Christ's substitutionary death. It satisfies all the snags. Faith in Christ's finished work is by the way much easier than trying to live a perfect life and trying to counter missteps with good deeds, not knowing whether you missed some or did enough.

There is no way for us to repay our sins to God.

Jesus makes the analogy of a slave owing a king 1 billion dollars & promising to pay it back! No, it's never going to happen. The only way we get our sins "repayed" is if God forgives our debt out of his grace and mercy by accepting Jesus's sacrifice on the cross as "payment" for our sins.

Let's look at it this way - according to your example. Let's say that you break God's law in some way, by fighting with someone & hurting them, or by stealing something, or slandering someone etc. And then you go and try to 'make up for it' by helping some other poor person? Does that make any sense? Does your positive act somehow undo the damage of your negative act?

No it doesn't. There is no way for you to completely undo the damage of a sin you commit. You cannot spend your life trying to play cleanup and catchup with your sins, you will never have a "balanced" sheet! God loves you and forgives you unconditionally and fully through Jesus. And then, if you let him, he gives you his Spirit and he changes you from the inside to be a better person.

Different religions believe different things will get you into heaven. the Muslims must do 5 things mecca, charity etc to get into heaven. Catholics believe the only way into heaven is the belief and acceptance of Jesus. I gave up religion a long time ago. I believe in a higher power just not worship.

So now I am a humanist and i live by 1 simple creed:

I live an honest life, i help others in need and i never stop learning or teaching others. Not because of the threat or promise of an afterlife but because i am human and i should.

Abraham Lincoln said "when I do good, I feel good. When i do Bad, I feel bad. That is my religion"

    Hope this helps you.

god doesn't exist and sins don't exist either, it is a social construction created by the church to give a sense of impending doom, that is a reason for people to follow it, make it an influential institution, rich etc the closest thing to a sin is the wrong you can do to others and it depends on them and the situation whether these can be repaid or not

"NOT by "works" of rightousness which we have done, but according to His mercy has He saved us."

"Salvation is by (God's) grace through faith (in Jesus as Lord and Savior); it is a gift; "NOT of works, lest any one should be boastful.

Note how many "I's" there are in your premise..."if I would do this or that...".......the issue is that you are not involved at all in salvation. It is through faith in the substitutionary death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

Your sins have already been paid for with the blood of Jesus. All you have to do is believe and ask forgiveness.

no such thing as sin, or damnation. that is a christian concept....there is no hell in judaism, and the whole idea of dying for our sins came from paganism. basically mithraism. its all bull. its all insanity and bul used to control the blind masses

If you believe in god he will forgive your sins but will send tou to damnation if you dont believe him.

But this is just my opinion....
