Should I take off the dried pus from an infected wound?

I got a cold sore a little while ago and just as it was going away it got infected. My doctor gave me antibiotics, and I'm on my 3rd morning out of 10, it hasn't done anything noticeably yet. It's been pussing, it's so gross, then it dried and forms a yellowish scab. I've been missing school and hiding in my room. I just really want it to go away so I can get back to my life.

Should I try and take off the dried pus? It's not a scab.

You should be gently washing this area once to twice a day with soap and water. Applying a drying cream such as hydrocortisone cream, Abreva or Herpicin will help it dry up faster. There should be no accumulation of debris (pus) on the top of any wound anywhere on your body - this does not promote good healing.

The best way to soften dry pus scabs (and bloodstains too, BTW) is hydrogen peroxide.

Apply it with cotton or tissues straight from the bottle of 4% H2O2 (the OTC stuff)

and fizz your troubles away. Take care to wash your hands carefully after fiddling with this thing... if the germs get from your hands to your eyes it could be a very nasty pink-eye.

PS Please do not apply hydrocortisone to any wound as advised above: steroids may be anti-inflammatory but they also oppose both wound healing and antibacterial defences.

<sigh> everyone on the Web is an expert!

Well, I'm an MD since 1976- that's something.

YES, wash with a warm washcloth, it will help to get rid of the infection faster.

you should probably also be applying bacitracin
