China has around four times the population of the US, and is no military lightweight. It has a standing army that greatly exceeds that of the US, and it's people know the terrain, analogous to Viet Nam.

Attacking would involve a land based invasion, a disaster in the making, or a massive aerial suppression, an act that has never cowed a nation before. neither britain nor Germany were actually defeated primarily through bombing, and it failed in Viet Nam too.

It would also be the fastest way of ruining the US economy, international trade and killing vast numbers of Americans. Don't expect other nations to support you either.

As for any atomic strike, that is a sure way of getting us all killed and the so-called 'land of the free' turned into a radioactive wasteland.
