2005 Toyota Corolla w/ 93k -Transmission drain & fill vs. transmission flush?
Last time I did my oil and checked all my fluids, I noticed how dark my ATF had gotten. Transmissions are a way beyond my DIY skills. My car currently has around 93k miles and runs great. I bought it around 40k miles and am honestly not sure if the previous owner ever tended to the fluids.
Should I do a drain & fill or should I do a full transmission flush? I've heard a full flush could potentially push sludge and buildup into the system damaging the transmission. Also, the ATF dipstick says "No need to replace ATF under normal driving conditions. See owners manual when replacing." However the owners manual says nothing about the ATF in it. Any recommendations out there!

We have owned 5 Toyotas from brand new during past 25 years and the longest has been 1993 Toyota Camry LE with 211,000 miles that was still running well when my wife and her sisters all opted for SUVs (2005 Toyota Highlander 6 cylinder AWD). I thought most Toyota owner manuals recommended transmission drain every 30,000 miles. Drain and refill and yes, I had it done on 2005 Highlander now with 50,000 miles has worked for me bec transmission overhaul is not only expensive and sometimes even though repaired with 12 month warranty might not be as before whereas ATF drain is like 4 or 5 ATF quarts, BG addictive and say $30 maybe $50 and doesn't require dealer as long as good mechanic using genuine Toyota ATF. At dealership they normally flush out all fluids with expensive machinery that will costs (call for quote) like $100 to $125.
Again if you want to baby and keep your Toyota for life, I recommend recurring oil changes at 5,000 mile interval, ATF drain every 30,000 miles and going to quality mechanic who knows Japanese vehicles and is reasonable priced as well as using only genuine Toyota parts.

Do you have an automatic transmission or a manual transmission in your Corolla? If you have an automatic, you should be able drain the ATF and refill it with the car on a level surface, and sufficient new ATF to refill the trans to the refill plug hole. Your OWNER's MANUAL should give you the correct viscosity of fresh ATF for year round driving. I do not know about any good and bad "buildup".
