What's wrong with a "One World Government"?

I often see people claiming that Obama, et al, are trying to create a single World Government with wide-reaching powers, either by strengthening the UN or some other method (recently, I've seen people saying that's the real goal of people supporting greenhouse gas emission controls). While I don't think Obama is actually trying to do this, even if he were, why do people always act like that's a bad thing? What do people believe is the inherent problem with having a single (or, at least a small number of) world government(s)? I am asking in all sincerity, because I really don't see why it's "obvious" that a One World Government is bad.

The further government gets from the individual the less likely it is to make a decision that benefits any specific individual. Hence "government", meaning the one who should make a choice, should follow the following hierarchy: individual, town or city, county, state, federal, (if it existed) world. Now, anything that can be provided at the lowest level should be provided at that level. Hence 90% (minimum) of decisions should be left to the individual. By the time we hit federal we've only really got a system of courts to settle interstate disputes and protection from foreign aggression to worry about, and at the world scale, well, I can't think of many things they can handle better than any entity higher on the food chain. Which means they are, for all practical purposes, useless. And we see this, with multinational groups like the UN and NATO. So if something is useless why bother with it? And if they're useless but exist, how long before they start appropriating for themselves decisions that would be better left to a higher entity? Before long the world government will be dictating individual decisions, which is exactly the opposite of the way things should function. Don't believe me? Look at our own federal system. According to our current "leaders" if I don't purchase a private service I can be fined and thrown in jail. God help us if a world government comes into being, they'd probably want to punish me for something some guy in Nambia does.

This is the kind of fascism tha the book .1984 warns.this is as bad as Communism and Nazism and the republicanism and other conservatism as well a phoney liberal dictatorships ,that we are living now in the united states t ,With a world government the greed wealthy are free not to pay any taxes b and they play god,The both conservative and fake liberal would be controlling .The Republicans and other conservatism oppose it causes it compete against them controlling the whole world .As a liberal, better than the old democratic party I believable every country should govern it;s' own.. That's true democracy That one country might help another country as long as it does not interfere in the other countries rights and liberties .This is why i am against the t.p.p

You are right on using multiple perspectives, but what truly determines what is right is based on your morals. There is one big deciding factor on morals though. It is this called an "amoral" person. It is someone who makes their own morals to follow. For example Hitler created his own morals that he should wipe the jews off the planet and that he is doing the world a good. In order to see what things are right and what is wrong, things need to be looked at from a neutral perspective. Only then can one determine what is right and what is wrong.

    One Government:

Pros: Unity, travel anywhere, more freedom

Cons: Too much power over people, corruption, unstable government, can't control people, and there's a lot of different religion, ethnicities and stuff that can't get a long. We possibly can not have a one world government unless the world is at peace and there's not tension between groups

Nothing, I am all for it. I am currently reading Michio Kaku's book "Visions" and he states that we will need to have a world government in the future. If we do not destroy ourselves before then it will become a reality. Science and technology and energy needs will eventually make it a necessity to have a one world government. Our economies are already inextricably intertwined with one another. When one country experiences economic woes they all feel the impact. The goal of a planetary civilization is not unreasonable, because we would be able to more fully harness the resources on a gigantic scale. The world population alone will require cooperation on an unprecedented scale just to feed everyone.

The potential for abuse of power is quite substantial. We can see that nobody on earth is yet ready to handle that much power. At least not until corruption becomes a thing of the past. To this point, corruption has flowed almost completely unchecked and is quite common. Even to some degree considered "acceptable".

  • local government is more responsive to the people it adminsters. that's why we have the 10th amendment that everybody pretends doesn't exist. the bigger the government, the bigger the chances are of special interests dictating policy. the more bureaucracy, the more chances there are for corruption to breed.

big government is criminal. and it would especially be on a world wide scale.

You can't have one world government without one world tyranny. Everyone will not agree with everyone on everything.

Well, it's not that bad I don't think, but I definitely agree with you on the fact he is not trying to create a One World Government.

I'm willing to bet you're one of those people with a "coexist" bumper sticker on your car.

And I'm also willing to bet you drive a compact car from 1993.
