If you think taxes are bad, are carbon taxes or income taxes worse?

I find the debate over carbon taxes odd. Let's say you're an anti-tax Republican who believes that global warming is a hoax and all taxes are bad and distort the economy. Wouldn't it _still_ be better to force taxes away away from income (=Work, a good thing) to carbon (=using resources that we import, not particularly good even if there is no climate effect). Taxes are bad, but the worst thing you can tax is what we currently tax.

Can some people against carbon taxes tell me why I'm wrong -- it especially seems odd to me because if Republicans accepted carbon taxes under the requirement that income taxes go down, they could probably make that stick right now... but are mostly losing the debate about whether global warming is happening and so by not making that compromise we're likely to see a net increase in government interference in the economy.

Update:

None of these feel like a real answer. Everybody's pissed so let's give up?

Jay -- I think you're confusing carbon tax and carbon trading schemes. Some financial sector interests are trying to make a profit out of other people's desire to keep the world livable for their kids... which is why we need simpler taxes instead of trading schemes.

Most of what the Federal government is doing is unconstitutional. Getting back to a smaller government would be best. So far these smart people who the left trust so much have over-spend 12 trillion dollars. Seems like that's dumb so why would I want to give them more control? They regulate your land, air, water, etc... but will not be satisfied until no one have any liberty left. Think of this debt, light traveling at 186,000 mps would go 6 trillion miles in a year & we got two of them. The states will have to say no & very soon!

They're both bad, but carbon taxes are worse because they will only profit global elitists. The UN and many other globalist groups just want to institute a global carbon tax and make carbon credits a hot new commodity. Al Gore has already made millions from his various carbon trading companies, and when it's mandated by international law, he'll make billions.

they are the two undesirable, yet carbon taxes are worse considering that they are going to easiest gross sales worldwide elitists. The UN and lots of distinctive globalist communities only would desire to institute a international carbon tax and make carbon credit a scorching new commodity. Al Gore has already made hundreds of thousands from his extremely lots of carbon finding out to purchase and advertising firms, and while it fairly is mandated via international legislations, he will make billions.

How about we limit government to its basic functions, pay for just that (about a third of what it now spends), pay the debt off in a generation (another third) and give us the rest of our money back?

Seriously - "income tax or carbon tax" is like a mugger asking you if you'd rather be held up with a knife or gun.
