I keep finding small snails in my tank. Should I get rid of them?
They must have come with the plant I got for my tank. Are they harmful?

Get this. The main reason the snails are still in your tank is because you overfeed. Without them, all the uneaten food you feed would rot and give a boost in your ammonia, not a good thing, unless you're a piece of activated carbon, which I doubt. The snails are the unsung heroes of the aquaria world, cleaning endlessly not for money, or recognition, but for honour and because they are always hungry. So, before you send them to snail heaven (where there is a clear 4 inches of fish crap on the floor and with succulent rotting leaves to munch on) ease up on the flakes. Then, you'll see (or actually you won't see) the numbers of snails steadily decreasing. They pose no danger to your plants as long as they are kept well fed and unaware of government conspiracies, and, as of current, thats taken care of. Loaches, specially botias, will greedily consume your snails. Ditto on puffers.

Well if you put like any real wood that wasn't washed enough, that could cause it. My best friend has them in his tank. He has to clean the tank every day cuz they make it look like black glass. They do semi keep algae under control, but I dont think They're worth the truboul. It depends how big a tank is and worth it makes sense to dump out a 50 gallon and spend a week repairing it. if u want to keep 'em just get a magnetic algae cleaner found in most pets stores. your hands don't get wet, and when you swipe it over the snails they fall off easily.
Good Luck!

No. They may, however, take over your tank. In some cases it can look good, in some it can be a complete eyesore. If you've got a good amount they do keep algae levels down at least a bit. If you need to get rid of them, you can buy a species of loach, or an Amazon Puffer (A peaceful freshwater puffer) that will eat them pretty quickly. Make sure you research to make sure that they're okay for your tank, however. Puffers are nippy and some loaches can get pretty big.

No they are not harmful, they may damage your plants though (bad). They may also keep the algae under control in the tank (good). But those little buggers will multiply like you would not believe (bad), so the choice is yours, you just need to weigh out the positives vs negatives.
Good luck

yes and no snails can be great for your tank if you keep the heat up a bit and careful about over feeding you should keep them in check. if you over feed them then they multiply like rabbits and worse. then you can have problems you most likely got a pest snails and they will become poop machines and are very hard to get rid of. keeping them in check will do good for your aquarium. i put in a mess load of plants in my 75 gallon they got every where and into everything i ended up getting assassin snails to keep mine in check. it took almost a year to to that they were that bad and it didnt make make tank very easy to keep up with. their in check now for about 8 years and no problem and the tank looks really good also. to prevent this you can mix a mild bleach solution and soak your plants in it for a minute and this will kill them. rinse your plants off really good or soak them for a day or so if you want, changing the water out often then put in your tank

nicely they are there because of the fact once you purchase stay flowers from shops, the flowers have snail eggs on them. you ought to use the lettuce technique (it won't harm the rest in the tank), only place a chunk of lettuce on the backside and the snails will flow slowly onto it, then only do away with the lettuce. or you ought to purchase fish that devour snails. yet i'd shop them, considering that they help shop the tank in stability.

usually not. a lot of times they help keep the tank clean and stuff. They're actually quite nice.
The only problem is that sometimes they multiply like rabbits!

They could be harmful down the road if left alone to multiply. They breed like rabbits and will be everywhere over time. They can get into your filter and get caught in your impeller and damage it.
