Would I be better off buying a new computer or just adding more memory?

I have a 4 and a half year old Dell Dimension3100. It is getting very slow lately and has very little memory left. What would you recommend?

Update:

I already run scans for viruses and spyware all of the time.

When you say "very little memory left" I assume you mean on your hard drive? Just buy a second hard drive. Installation is easy. Your computer should not slow down over time unless you are running software beyond it's ability or you are loaded down with virius, spyware, and other background garbage you don't need. Clean out the stuff slowing you down, run age appropriate software and add a drive and you should be good to go. You can get a 500 gb hard drive for about 60 bucks at Newegg, the other stuff can be done for free in an hour of so of work.

well adding memory can be really effective at speeding up a computer. but its probably also adware spyware and viruses that are main causes of a computer slowing down. one sure fire way to take care of that would be to back up your documents and anything important onto disks and format the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch. A fresh start can make a difference too. You can try just running scans to clean out infections like that but its almost impossible to get everything that way.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.

The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

    http://www.fix-system.com/

lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.

    Good luck!

me personally i would build my own or at least pick parts i need. Im not sure how interchangable dells are. You should if you havent already do a scan virus spyware, defrag all that stuff then see if that helps if not poss maybe some ram. If you build your own then you dont always need to build a brand new one you can just switch parts when needed.

I would save all the files and documents that I wanted to a disk then. Reset it back to factory settings. that would wipe it all out and your system would be like new. I could tell you step by step how to do this if you like.

If you haven't already try formatting the harddrive and then put windows back on.

    and also add memory.
