Let x = distance from Chicago.

Let t be the time taken by the train on an adjacent track.

Let t + 1/2 hour be the time taken by the train leaving from chicago going 55 mph

Distance from Chicago when this train meet the second = 55(t+1/2) = x

Distance from N.Y. when the train meet the first = 65t = 1000-x

    The sum is 1000 = 55(t+1/2)+ 65t

Solve t in hours and then solve x.
