Liberals and atheists, and only liberals and atheists!?
How will you be celebrating Christmas this year?
I'm a liberal and an atheist and this year we're not getting a tree. It's not because we're against it but I've been working too much to feel like messing with it. I'll go back to my home town and visit with family.
Many conservatives, especially those who watch FNC, seem to be under the impression that we're out to destroy Christmas. So, I'd like to know what you are doing, if anything.
xexorx, wtf?

Hahahaha... we bought a tree. But that's only because we have very young children. We have not indoctrinated them with Christian ideology, nor do we plan to. Socially Christmas is pretty fun. We like giving each other gifts.
When our children are older, we'll let them decide whether they want Christmas or not.
All of my original plans to thwart Christmas for conservatives went out the window when I realized we were in a recession and I couldn't donate anymore time or money to the cause.

Some liberals are atheists, some are Jews, some are Christians, some are Buddhists, etc. The common denominator for liberalism appears to be taking a critical, skeptical approach to all things. They don't take things at face value, and don't reflexively or automatically believe everything they read or hear, including religious texts. It's that whole thinking for yourself thing. This in fact what separates Reform Judaism from Orthodox Judaism. Orthodox Jews believe the Torah is the written word of God, pure and simple, the way some fundamentalist Christians believe the King James Bible (even though it's in English, and was therefore obviously translated at least once) is the literal word of God. Reform Jews belive the Torah is divinely inspired, but that the Torah contains allusions and metaphors that need to be thought about, interpreted, made relevant to the individual. A bit of a tangent, but I'm trying to illustrate a point. Not all liberals are atheists, but their approach to religion may be a bit different from conservatives, who tend to be a bit more dogmatic, inflexible and literal. Are all atheists liberals? I'm sure not 100%, but I can't think of any atheists I know who are politically conservative, oh, with the exception of some Air Force Academy graduates. What goes on at that place? Who called Jesus a Liberal? Oh my goodness, no, Jesus hated liberals - that rabbi was a Radical, more of a Che Guevara or an Abbie Hoffman than a Bill Clinton. Liberals are too establishment - the "let's change it from the inside" approach. Jesus was more of a "burn, baby, burn" kinda guy. He didn't want to modify the existing social order - he wanted to tear it down and start over with something better, starting with all Romans outta Palestine.

Celebrating it with a tree and presents and everything. I'm an independent atheist to be precise, though. Christmas is hardly a religious holiday anyway.
"Where is my fried chicken" is an example of a typical Christian supremacist racist conservative. I hope you get a high school diploma some day and move out of your double wide.

I'm celebrating the Flying Spaghetti Monster Mash on December 28th. I'll be having my family over for some spaghetti with meatballs. Then will watch our favourite monster movies and enjoy a few beer volcanoes. Unfortunately, there will be no stripper factories after last years fiasco.

As we do every year we put up a tree for the New Years, so we could put the presents there. It is traditional in many European countries and relates to children folklore.
It has nothing to do with Christianity. Jesus was born in August.

Same tree and routine for 10 years now: Christmas shopping, waiting for Santa, destroying Christmas - Ho Hum.

just direct said conservatives over to the Religion and Spirituality section. that question is asked by some ignorant fanatic at least once a day, and there's usually a few people who can be bothered to highlight their ignorance, the mistakes in their assumptions arising from it, and give them an answer.

As a Liberal I do not celebrate Christmas I celebrate Hoobalation
My family gathers in remembrance of all the Hoos down in Hooville that the Grinch failed to spoil their Spirit. We play boobingers and tootingers, then gather for our Hoo pudding Hoo hash and roast beast

Well, Christmas time was originally a pagan holiday anyway.
Christmas celebrations today are by and large almost indiscernible from a celebration of Jesus' birth.

Tree, presents, visiting relatives.
