You friend is right - one book is sub-titled 'The 10,000 Day War', It started after WWII when the French wanted to re-establish their colonies in IndoChina, and the locals, who had had a taste of guerilla fighting against the Japanese, said 'No'. French rule ended in, I think 1954, following the defeat of French forces at Diem Bien Phu, a remote firebase in the north.

Then followed a period when the South and North were separated by UN mandate, with the majority of the South being Buddhist and Catholic, and the North being Communist. During this time, the move by the North and local Viet Cong (they did not call themselves that) to reunite North and South caused increased fighting and unrest in the South, which lead to the US sending in 'advisors' under the MAAT (Military Aid and Advisory Team) scheme.

This proved inadequate to stem the rising control of large parts of the countryside by the Viet Cong/North Vietnamese, and the South, despite increasing US aid, suffered some heavy defeats in 1964. During this time, the South Vietnamese were also supported by the US Navy, which supported SVN raids against the north - one of these lead to the 'Gulf of Tonkin' incident, in which US ships were attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats.

This lead to US ground force intervention in 1965, firstly by US Marines, ostensibly to defend air assets, then US Army troops, tasked with the mission of fighting and destroying North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong Main Force troops. The mission of the Marines quickly changed over to attacking the enemy, rather than a defensive role.

Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and South Korea contributed troops as well.

The war continued, with massive combat taking place in 1968-69, until 1973, when the US and its allies finally withdrew all ground troops.

Following this, the North Vietnamese launched a conventional style attack against the South, and captured a large area of South Vietnam. This attack stalled when the US intervened with air power.

In 1975, judging the time to be right, with the US having lost interest in Vietnam and also being engaged in other areas, the North again attacked the South, this time finally overcoming SVN resistance and capturing Saigon. They then 'disappeared' 120,000 South Vietnamese in the first week of occupation.

Source(s): Two tours; personal friendship with the family of the head of the Saigon river pilots; command role in 1978 're-education' camp liberation mission.

Your friend is correct on some matters, incorrect on one matter, and missing a detail or two.

Yes, for the people of Vietnam there were two wars (the French War & the American War) that lasted nearly 30 years (from 1945-1975). American military advisers were sent to Vietnam in 1960. The Americans were basically fighting a covert war from 1960-1965, and when this failed they had to resort to using combat troops which first came in 1965, not 1967. Yes, on March 29th, 1973, the last American troops did leave Vietnam. You were right to doubt your friend. Good luck, Betty.

VIETNAM WAS A WAR THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN FOUGHT.The loss of life was terrible and men who went from on side of the world to another so young and in a situation that they probably never truly understood was diabolical the needless money lives damage that the war cost on both sides is beyond any-ones true comprehension of the war The Americans were of an average age of just nineteen they were fighting an enemy who bobby trapped and fought a dirty war they hid themselves in the most ingenious ways and caused horrific injuries to these young boys they brought down moral and left the survivors in a life time of pain and suffering, when the veterans returned home the propaganda branded them as baby killers and murderers . When you fight a war in a country that you probably would never have even know except in a geography lesson in school fighting for a population that can not even speak your language it does not make sense.

The war in Vietnam did nothing for the American presidents popularity just how the war in Iraq has done nothing for Bush and Blair to have to justify our presence in a country is something that is impossible to say or do the reasons of war are often huge lies and all about money resources and power just like Afghanistan why?

i think of until eventually now asking an prolonged laundry checklist of questions, a number of them very very own, you will desire to point precisely what it is for, the type you propose to apply it, and the type you will maintain the responder's very own innovations. offering call, start date, start place, and different innovations to a stranger isn't many times a stable theory and would desire to hold approximately identity theft. The OP would desire to describe precisely what it is for and how he will maintain your innovations until eventually now asking maximum of questions. If it is basically for statistical purposes, he would not choose your call, start date/place or different very own figuring out innovations.
