Are LED christmas lights more reliable than the traditional ones?

I spent an hour or two fighting with strands of outdoor christmas lights yesterday, trying to find strands that worked, wiggling bulbs to coax the dark ones back to life, etc. I'm about ready to pitch the box full and replace them. I see the LED light strings on the store shelves, but they still have the lights that can be removed, like the traditional strings. I know LEDs are more efficient and use less power, but the design is otherwise very similar to the old ones. Are there LED light strings out there that are designed for outdoor use and that will last a long time without half a string going dark at random? If you've had good luck with them, and you've got a brand name, pass it along!

My boyfriend prefers the LED lights because they do last longer, they use less electricity to run, and don't heat up the way the old-fashioned ones do. I've held out for a while and have kept using the older ones, but I have a feeling next year he'll get his way and have the LEDs. (My only complaint about them is that they have a different glow to them than the older ones do... They don't look the same!)

Most of the people I know who use them have raved about them, though. They've said they've had good experience with them and that they really do save you money on the power bill.

If you're interested, I'd suggest trying them - if you don't like them, you can always go back to the old ones next year.

Only if you get a brand that is made for light contractors and commercial projects like these: http://www.christmasworld.com/christmas-lights/led...

LED lights are the new big thing, and so everybody and their dog wants to make/sell them. So the LED lights you get at Walmart or Home Depot are going to be just as low quality as the incandescent ones you are having problems with. So make sure you go with a trusted brand like the link above. LED lights have a much longer bulb life and consume a fraction of the energy that incandescents do: http://www.christmasworld.com/led-benefits

Another thing about the brand I linked to: the lights look really good- they aren't the cheap strawberry-looking ones you see everywhere. These look just like regular Christmas lights, and the colors are more vivid.

yes - I have LED Christmas lights from ChristmasLightsEtc.com: http://www.christmaslightsetc.com/led-christmas-li... - the prelamped strings can not have the bulbs loosened from the wire, but you can get teh bulbs and strings separately as well. I do both - we have the LED mini and C6 lights pre-wired, but our C7 lights are separate from the stringer. The bulbs won't break because they are not glass, there is no filament to burn out, and we can use more and our bill won't go up. And they are easier to store since the bulbs are stronger.
