I have a 91 Mercury Topaz and it has completely shut down while I attempted to drive it. its will start and sounds like its running but then when i let go of the key it shuts off and back fires. i can get it to start after a few minutes after i rev the engine. Does anyone know why this is and what should you do to stop this from happening?

I sounds like your car has slipped a cog on its timing belt and the engine's valve timing is now off.

A belt replacement and a re-timing would be in order if that's the case.

Altenator is in all probability defective. once you're reachable or comprehend somebody who's take away it and take to AutoZone or O'Reilly and characteristic it bench examined, and replace as needed. additionally take the battery in for charging and finding out to boot, if it is not protecting 12 volts minimum it extremely is going to destroy a sparkling alternator.
