39 weeks + 3 and not lactating....?
Hi. I've been advised to express ante-natally, as I do not wish to breastfeed following a very traumatic birth and breastfeeding experience, but wish to give my baby colustrom for the first few days.
However, I have not had a single drop despite 20 minute sessions per breast in the bath each day for the last 3 days. (Hand expressing as suggested by midwives.)
Would this suggest that I am pyschologically blocking this and that I am not going to be able to do this? I can't stand milking myself like a cow, its disgusting and demoralising and I'm not getting anywhere.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for the suggestions/advice. The midwives seem to think this should be fine - certainly I started leaking colustrum before my daughter was born. But this time nothing. After a very, very difficult birth a midwife grabbed my breast without asking last time and attached my daughter to it - I dreamt of being violently raped for days afterwards, and had serious bonding issues, so you can see why I do not wish to do this this time. Apparantly, I should be able to get some colustrum at this point - some women get and store bags and bags! I just think my mind isn't going to let this happen - and my Health Visitor reckons I'm probably just better off for the sake of mental health and bonding not to do it.
Feel very guilty about antibodies etc though.

you can't start your milk before the baby comes - labor and birth (even by c section) triggers your body to produce colostrum and milk. you have to wait until the baby is born..... that sounds so silly what they are telling you to do! good luck - maybe it won't be so tramatic this time - why don't you just try to breast feed again????? ♥

It could be that you won't be able to do it because of the way you view breastfeeding. If you feel disgusting hand expressing milk, then you won't be able to express any. Instead, when you're expressing, try thinking of it in a different way. Think of it as giving your baby extra immunity or something along those lines. If you take a more positive way of thinking when hand expressing, you'll probably get some milk out. Good luck

You wont' actually produce significant amounts of colostrum until after baby is born. (It's the separation of the placenta that triggers milk production.)
To be honest ... it sounds like you are just opposed to breastfeeding on principle. If that's the case, the minor benefits that baby will get from a couple of days of colostrum are minimal, and not worth the effort and stress they are causing you. Forget about expressing and give your baby formula.

I have not heard of this..normally you would not want to start trying to pump before giving birth as the colostrum will be there for your baby when he/she is born. If you do not feel comfortable doing it, then I guess I would say to stop. It is best for your baby to breastfeed..and to have the colostrom..but there are lots of mothers that do not do this. The decision is something you will have to make on your own.

If you don't think you have enough colostrum, call the lactation consultant at the hospital and go see her. She will be able to tell you if you have enough or not.
