I'm undergoing radiation for early breast cancer. I'm curious as to how the markings on my chest are used?

Fo example, some of the marks are simply vertical, one is horizontal and some look like crosses. How are these various marks used to define treatment area?

    Mine were just simple dots.

They are for the technicians to use to line you up exactly (mine were lined up using laser beams) so that they can direct the radiation to the exact location needed using 3 dimensions.

It helps the doctors line everything up so that the radiation is hitting the exact same spot every time.

markings are 3d axis for technician to focus beam on the tumor directly and avoid surrounding tissue.
