please help! why is my computer sending and receiving when i am not using it?
it seems my computer is sending and receiving data even though i am not using the internet. the little icon in the tray comes on for 3 seconds and then off for three seconds continuously.
i am using avast anti virus.
Usually, if I am not using the internet, the little icon does not come on at all. However today, it is continuously coming on every 3 seconds and turning off again. There is data being sent and received too. I have not uploaded any programs recently, how can I find out what is using the internet?
wow, yahoo answers really is useless..

most routers just blink when they get any activity along the line

This is not uncommon, unless it is large amounts of data that cannot be accounted for.
Your computer and the computer on the other end will continuously talk to make sure that there is still an open line of communication.
Also, other applications on your computer may also be using the internet
1. Windows Updates
2. Your clock checking to see if it's still accurate
3. Program updates (eg, your antivirus program)
Unless you notice that your computer is continuously sending or receiving data, don't be alarmed.

Sometimes routers just blink. Mine stays on even after I shut off my computer. Unless your local area connection status says you are sending and/or receiving data, you aren't.
