If people don't like gay marriage then why don't they just not get one?
Here's the thing, and alot of you kids don't really understand. Marriage was not a religious sacrament until the 1600's. (Wikipedia is your friend) It has always been about governmental laws ans the contract that binds the two people together.
If you feel a marriage is a religious sacrament between a man and a woman then I'm sure you would have no problem revoking all your governmental rights as a legal couple and all the governmental benefits that come with it in exchange for a religious sacramental union under God.
Why do you think you need a marriage license, why do you think there's paperwork to fill out before you get married? You think those papers get sent to God for His approval? No. It goes to your state capitol (that would be the government) to be signed, stamped and sent back to you.
Once you get those papers, you sign them, have a witness sign them and voila! You're married. You don't need a church to be married.
I find it pitiful that you people who are so against gay marriage you don't even know how it all works yourselves. You just sit there and judge what you don't know out of hate, bigotry and just plain ignorance.
So what are your opinion? I stated mine, how do you all feel. I especially want to hear from those who oppose gay marriage, that is if you're mature enough to respond.
@ I like men: You see, it's people like that is the problem. You say you read my question but that's it. Thank you for your honesty, but it didn't get you anywhere. You're still ignorant and you will remain that way until you have the common decency to treat others equally and with respect. Being gay is not a choice, not that you care since you are so content on remaining the ignorant you were born to be and will die as being. What is the point of life if you don't learn?
@Timothy: You [chosen] religious views mean absolutely nothing to me. Just because you believe in them doesn't mean I have to. The difference between you and me is that I don't go around spreading hate nor do I go around and out of my way to prevent others their civil rights based on my religious beliefs. You haven't read one word in my post, I recommend you do and that of everyone else who posted here. Open your eyes.

I agree whole heartily with you.
The thing is, people need to keep their noses out of the PERSONAL lives of others.
Imagine how pissed these same people would be if we were able to outlaw their religion? Religion is a personal choice, right?
Sadly, these same people do not possess the ability to see things from all sides. They are brainwashed into thinking in only one way. The way that benefits them and their agendas.
@ Timothy - Keep your religion to yourself. How dare you think you have the right to force me to follow your religion.
@ Dante-
This isn't a question about theology. Your religion and it's predecessor are only less than 6000 yrs old. Explain how Chinese (which predates the Jews) had marriage before 6000 BC? Explain how American Indians had marriages for tens of thousands of years?!?!
Also - since I am a bit of a theologian - show me where it states "God created marriage for 1 man and 1 woman, only?!?"
The Early Hebrews had multiple wives.
Your logic is flawed because you search for information in the Bible. You have the nerve to attack another's source, when your's is proved to be riddled with historical inaccuracies, mistranslations, and omissions of original works?
Dude - you just completely and totally discredited yourself.
And as I stated to Timothy - keep your religion to yourself. How dare you assume you have any right at all to force me to follow your religion.

You should ask this in the religious and spirituality section, they come out with the most vile, ignorant, stupid but funny how stupid somebody can be, responses.
I just don't understand it, it makes me think the government are all a bunch of dopes, not very encouraging with the times were going through but then again they're only catering to what the majority wants which is scarier because the majority don't even know why they want it and they don't even understand it.
How many times have bible verses been misunderstood and how many times have people used that for their own advantage to hide their own prejudice? There's millions of verses only about five about homosexuality (whether it is really or not, I've heard it was mistranslated) yet people only focus on those couple of verses, isn't that a bit strange?
I really wish I knew psychology so I could understand why they hate on people and things that have nothing to do with them. Before science was their enemy, something that's logical, always proven, but they hated that because they were probably too stupid to understand it.
It's easier to believe in a fairytale, especially when most people around you do. Especially when it's taught to you since you were a child. I bet if nobody said santa wasn't real to us and everyone believed in him, even if he didn't bring presents they'd probably still believe that if they were good enough they'd get presents. They'd probably judge everyone who never got those presents either even though they didn't, but as long as they prayed right? That just makes them better people and "chosen" by God because they refused to stop believing in something stupid but comforting nonetheless, if you're a apart of it all that is.

I'm for gay marriage, and it's legal where I live. However I still have to put up with a bunch of ignorant people who impose their views in offensive ways when really, when it comes down to it, anti-gay opinions are not necessary lol. What these people have to say is pointless because there really is no harm in gay marriage. I agree with you, they're just trying to impose their say and control others. Plus the divorce rate in "sacred" marriages...that's a whole other issue. Another thing, if you're going to follow the bible, follow every rule, don't just pick and choose whatever suits you.
I have a theory that people who think being gay is an option, are really gay themselves. I'm straight, and I can't choose to be gay because I'm just not physically or emotionally attracted to other women. If people think their sexuality is a choice, then clearly they can choose who to be attracted to so they're not as straight as they think lol. So they reject gay marriage because if it's legal, it means they have the option themselves, and they're afraid they'll like it too much.
I understand people have grown up in a household where parents force their views on you, however I think ignorance is unforgivable past a certain point. Like when you're a kid and your parents influence you...it's not your fault because there was no one to tell you about the opposing view, but if you're an adult all grown up and had life experiences, you should be able to realize that there's nothing wrong with homosexuality.

in my opinion religious marriage should not be recognized by the state, (it's between man and god). if a couple is religious and wants to get married before god, let them do so, but if they want benefits from the state they should be married by the state. the thing about religion is that it is a spiritual situation. some like it, some don't, some follow it, some don't. nevertheless, religion has managed to create political systems , theocracies, and now that we live in democracies (that needs discussion), we carry some of their traditions. being a religious person means that one dedicates his life and life style to god according to each beliefs it doesn't mean that he/she imposes religious beliefs to the rest of the people. In fact, true religious people are a vast minority and the rest of the world is just following a tradition. i'm not judging here, i'm not saying that being religious is right or wrong, I believe each has the right to decide for himself and follow the path that gives him/her happiness, but we do live in a secular world not a theocracy. the law of state should be for all and fair to all. the true question about marriages is not whether homosexuals should have the right to marry, it is self evident that in a democracy all citizens should have equal rights, the question is whether it is right to everyone to live under a law (religion) that most of the people couldn't care less. the foundation of our western society is changing because people don't really like it and tradition reacts. The future will show us what is really right but for now, happiness belongs only to the few that both the state and religion bless...or just don't get in their way.
edit: onthespot: it is obvious that you have great knowledge of theology, i'm sure you know that jesus didn't come as a political figure and actually took no part in politics of his time. actually, he didn't care at all, he only cared about people finding the kingdom of heaven within themselves, so why don't christians begin by imitating him instead of imitating the romans???

It's mainly fundamentalists that are against gay marriage I think.
I believe in equal rights for all 'people' which means I dislike your generalisation about young people. Don't blame young people, the policy makers are mature people.
I agree with your arguement but you shouldn't even have to go into that much detail. It would be nice if we lived in a world where policy makers would just say, "Right, you're people so you all get the same rights and freedoms."

Your moniker is inapt. There's nothing "average" about your Q&As. You are always right on the mark!
Excuse me, "Love U," but I'm old (Technically--over 65!) and I get it. Old people can change with the times, but too often they get left behind by the younger generation. If you want to help, you need to get out and meet older people and show them that being gay is a good thing for society as a whole.
I make it a point to have young friends and, NO, I'm not perving on any of them. (This doesn't mean I don't let them perve on me if they decide to do a little grave robbing. But I've never robbed a cradle in my life!)

i realised this about 4 yrs ago wen i was like 13
its so sad so many old people still cant get it
but its not just the civilians but the govt laws itself which is bs that it combines religion with its constitution( which in fact should both b separate ) and gives rights only after people r religiously stamped as couples ...thus depriving the rest with major constitutional rights

You are spot on. Unless you abide by the state's laws on marriage, you can only get a ceremony done by your religion. And that ceremony doesn't provide you with ANY benefits (state OR federal) if something happens to you or your "spouse".
It is a shame that after all the trials & tribulations this country has been through with discrimination/unequal treatment of people based on religion, race/skin color, nationality, gender, veteran status, disability, or social status, we haven’t learned from past mistakes. Once again, this country is discriminating against another group of taxpaying, law abiding citizens who are contributing members to our society. 2 consenting adults REGARDLESS of sex should be allowed to marry as long as they meet their state's regulation for marriage. Yet even when they DO, our federal government STILL denies them the full benefits of marriage that are automatically bestowed on straight married couples.
Civil rights were taken away & unequal treatment of others was seen as ok by the majority. When people of color, different nationalities, women, people with disabilities & veterans groups fought for their rights, they were met with strong opposition & their civil rights had to be handled by our GOVERNMENT in order for equality to prevail. If these groups waited on the support of the majority, they would still be discriminated against to this day. People don't like change & want to keep the status quo. And as long as the rights of these groups of people didn't affect the majority, the majority didn't care. We are just repeating history.
But I think my favorite quote sums up my sentiment pretty well:
"Of all things, men do not like to feel that they are guilty of wrong, and if you make them feel guilty, they will try desperately to justify it on any grounds; but failing that, and seeing no immediate solution that will set things right without too much cost to their lives and property, they will kill that which evoked in them the condemning sense of guilt..." excerpt from “Native Son” by Richard Wright

You are right. In fact, Texas is SO ignorant to it that they accidentally banned all marriages all together to make sure they got rid of it.
