250Cc engine off road cycle-could it be made street legal?

Our neighbor is giving us this little dirt bike as hes retiring and moving. It will be fun and no one can argue with free-but I also had the thought of-could it be made legal to ride on the streets? Probably not fwy of course! My son has no car right now and is borrowing my hubbys truck-it would be cool if he could use it for a ride to work. Am I crazy?

Safety first, of course. Can it be safely ridden? Good name brand. Decent mechanical shape. No wrecks. Straight. Necessary insurance. All that good stuff.

I'd suggest checking with your local motorcycle shop... as they would likely do the work as well and/or tell you whether it was worth the effort. Your state's DMV would have the on-road requirements.

From the Washington State DMV website and the PDF of the motorcycle guide (page 4):

The law requires that street-legal motorcycles have:

    • a mirror mounted on the left and right side that give a clear view of at least 200 feet to the rear .

    • a working muffler that prevents excessive or unusual noise . Cutouts, bypasses, or similar devices, and changing the exhaust system to amplify the noise is illegal .

    • handlebars that are not more than 30 inches above seat level .

    • a permanent seat for riders. You cannot carry a passenger unless the motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person .

    • foot rests for the rider and passenger. No one can ride with both feet on the same side of the machine .

    • a horn which can be heard for at least 200 feet.

    • at least one headlight, but not more than two, and one taillight . The lights must be in use whenever the motorcycle is operated on the public roadway

There are probably more detailed sources available... but that was a quickie.

    Good luck.

In almost all states that can never be made street legal. The VIN is tied to OFF ROAD USE ONLY, and if it ever was street legal it would have to pass emissions testing in a good number of states. No chance a two stroke could do that, if it's a 4 stroke it would be easier.

I think you'd need to put lights and a speedometer on it. Call a motorcycle shop and ask, preferably a dealer of whatever brand the dirt bike is. You might need a bill of sale for the bike.

While it depends where you live, IN the USA, even if you could put turn signals, lights, speed ohmeter, horn etc on it, it probably wouldnt be cost effective to try and get it to pass POLLUTION control requirements. If you want, look up DMV regulations by state, or just call the local vehical inspection station.

    Good Luck !

It depends on where you are from, but Baja Designs makes conversion kits (lights etc) to legalize alot of bikes. I would start there.
