Consult your manual again. The release is not supposed to move side to side. Make sure that you aren't pushing the release for the floor plate.
Follow the directions listed on page 9.
I'll list them for you in case you don't have the manual.
1. Always point the fire arm in a safe direction.
2. Put safety in "S" position.
3. Do not touch the trigger while moving the safety mechanism.
4. Raise bolt handle.
5. Pull bolt handle all the way back.
6. Push bolt stop release in trigger guard. See picture 8. (You push it up.)
7. Slide the bolt assembly from the firearm.

Try just opening the action but not moving the bolt back yet; now hold the release button down and finish pulling the bolt back. The release button is inside the trigger guard above and ahead of the trigger. Play with it until it works. My 700 is the old one and you have to put the safety on 'fire' first.

i love the model 700 but there are afew problems you may have the release is bent on the inside, you got dirt in there and now your gonna have to take it off the stock to clean it or, try to just push the button before you pull the bolt all the way back then hold it and pull and if that doesn't work have remington send you a new one and that one will work.
