Sure, I've heard of Markel.
Instead of working with that salesman, go call another local broker, and get a second opinion - or a second quote.

They are a legitimate company and they have a good defined benefit plan. However, I would not recommend a defined benefit plan to anyone unless they have severe medical conditions that would not qualify them for a major medical because the plans have many, many limitations.
