Is this right, in that I am told it may be illegal to generate my own fireworks ?

Hi,

I am no pyrotechnic, but know how to build toy rockets and bangers etc

I am informed that special branch may come around and ask questions if I go ahead with sulphur, magnesium, cobalt etc etc in the garage.

I personally see no harm, and they are safe, but could I fall foul of some legislation ?

after 9/11 and the terrorist attacks on London buses, making any kind of explosive device or equipment would be severly more than just frowned upon, you're talking your familys history, and private business being looked at through a microscope, and i'd say a 98% chance of a custodial sentence, in short, JAIL TIME! look up laws on firearms, explosives gunpowder etc, i think you'll find you are required to have a valid firearms licence just to do the very minimum with such substances.

it does make interesting reading though.

There are a whole raft of laws and rules about this, including The Manufacture and Storage of Explosives Regulations 2005. Yes, you may well be looked at closely by Special Branch or the anti-terrorist people, for obvious reasons surely. Suppliers of the materials may well advise the authorities who is ordering from them.

Certainly will be illegal in the UK, you would need a special license, and have to have a special blast protected area in which to work which would have to be a specific distance from any other structure. As you are dealing with explosives, then yes the anti terrorist people would be interested because of the aftermath of 9/11 and the London bombs.

You need a Fireworks licence if you're storing in excess of 5kg net mass of explosives, see the link for full info.

    Yes. Probably several, dealing with:

    - making explosives.

    - storing explosives in an unsafe place.

Your domestic fire insurance cover will almost certainly be invalidated by making or storing explosives in your garage.

It is illegal to make explosives, which is what you are doing, without a federal license.
