What stock car is faster, the 2002 Subaru wrx or the 2002 1.8t Golf gti?

VW

1.8 litre turbo - 180 HP, 173 lb-ft torque, 2927 pounds, yielding 16.26 lb/HP

Subaru WRX - 2.0 litre turbo - 227 HP, 217 lb-ft, 3085 pounds(sedan) or 3165 pounds (Sport Wagon), yielding 13.59 lb/HP or 13.94 lb/HP

The published 0 to 60 time for the Subaru is 5.8 seconds. The VW does it in 6.5 seconds.

Both cars are equipped with five speed manual transmissions in this comparison. Clearly, the WRX is a stronger car on straight pavement, and not heavy compared to the VW when you factor in the weight of the all-wheel drive system.

On a road course, the lower center of gravity of the Subie and its AWD will give the VW fits in the turns. Neither of these are big performance cars, so comparing top speeds is trivial.

As built at the factories the VW really can't compare to the Subaru. Even the 238 pounds heavier Sport wagon bodied WRX has a better weight/power ratio than the VW.

your subi will obviously take on a gti no prob. funny thing is you could drag him on an extra .2 seconds every shift. if both are manual trans. your shift time would make the difference in a straightaway. when it comes to taking corners, your drivetrain is incomparable. gti's are lighter, barely, and the rear based traction on the wrx makes a big difference when it comes to acceleration out of each turn. the only way this guy could beat you is if he is truly a better driver. using the car's lightweight to his advantage, shifting, and swift acceleration is all he has against you. apex turning is all you need to smoke the spit outta this guy. along with some true rally tactics. steer and correct properly. i have an xt FORESTER and embarrassed gti's civic's mustang's, audi a4's, and most proudly a maro ss. imagine what u could do. you have weight distribution on your side compared to me. you already answered your own question to begin with. seems like you just need some confidence behind the wheel.

With a 3.2 litre V6, 248hp engine, and four wheel drive, that takes about 6.5 seconds to get to 60mph, and has a top end of 155mph. So I really can't see a 1.8 turbo 180hp Golf with front wheel drive being any competition against a WRX.

I have driven both back to back. I would have to say the wrx was faster. After have had owned the wrx for over 170k miles it's pretty reliable. Yet the trans can be pretty weak in the 02 wrx if you upgrade.

dont even worry about it man, even if your wrx was stock vs his stock gti, you would still beat him in any type of race, add to the fact that you have 260-270hp (since you said it was dynoed i suppose you mean at the wheels? although that seems very high for the mods you listed ) you would just blow by him. i know of people with mods like yours who have beaten stock r32s.
