Can an .exe file become contaminated with a Trojan.?

.

I have had tnplus.exe sitting happily on my computer for 7 years. It is the .exe file for TurboNotes

In a Nortons Scan last night, Nortons suddenly decided that this tnplus.exe was a Trojan and removed it from my computer.

Is it possible for an already existing .exe file to become contaminated with a Trojan, or is this result more likely to be a false positive?

I have tried googling without success.

Thank you.

I think it's false positive myself. I saw the Prevx but that is the only one that said it's a worm and no where else say it's a trojan or malware. Malware these days will target the registry to change the parameters, deposit files in System32 and documents and settings, modifying certain system files, ending running processes of your security programs, preventing you from going to security websites, so that they can deposit more malware, steal sensitive details, siphoning bank accounts, taking control of your computer and more. There are polymorphic file infectors which infects all .exe like Virut or Sality. But, I doubt that malware creators would target a program which is TurboNotes.

You can submit the sample to Norton and they will verify it for you. Also you can upload the file to Jott''s malware scan and Virus Total and see what they say.

Yes, an .exe file means it can be executed. This is mainly in installers. Some viruses/malware may be attached onto the .exe file. When executed, it causes the virus to be present, most likely, resulting in a rogue antivirus. Try scanning with virustotal.com. Upload your file (if you can) and it will submit if it is a virus or not from 40 different security programs.

It's possible. I would first check to see if the file has been recently modified or changed. You can also check it on virustotal.com
