What kind of god is God then?
"Since God told the Israelites, "You shall have no other gods before Me." (Deuteronomy 5:7), it is important to understand what is meant by a god. A god is any person or thing that is conceived to have superior power and is worthy of worship, honor, praise, and exaltation. Most of the passages we will be examining refer to idols as gods."
I got that from this link...

"A god is any person or thing that is conceived to have superior power and is worthy of worship, honor, praise, and exaltation."
Why would the god that you believe in call himself the exact same word that is also used to describe "idols"? "I am GOD... you shall have no other GODS before me." I mean this one is hard to get around. God may as well be saying, " I am an IDOL you shall have no other IDOLS before me" since the words are interchangeable. I am having a problem with the exact same word --god-- being used in two extremely different ways. How can one definition describe, what is believed to be by many, the supreme creator of the universe and, in the very same sentence, the other usage of the word is a mere person or thing? Something seems fishy here.

The answer is very simple.
One contemplates God in the objective reality of who he is.
The other example contemplates God from the subjective reality of what God should be to you.
For instance, God insists you put your trust in Him.
You are distrustful, thinking God is not reliable and that you need to fend for yourself.
You think about it, and decide the safest thing you can find in this life is to amass large amounts of money, which will enable you to by protections and insurances that are not afforded to the poor.
You have made money your god.

Question –
Why would the god that you believe in call himself the exact same word that is also used to describe "idols"?
Simple answer –
He didn’t, but when mankind chose to ignored God they realised there were forces at work which were not understood. So they turned to one of a group of supernatural beings, each of which is worshipped as the personification or controller of some aspect of the universe.
I hope you can see that it is all part of God’s declaration of unity as the one creator.
To subdivide Him into differed parts was not acceptable.
This is still the case today.
God always has claimed the Jesus was His Son.
Jesus always claimed that God was his Father.
The Holy Spirit is and always has been the power by which God operates.
They are Three different entities not one.
Two of the entities having a Father and Son relationship.
No division of a single item.

There is a difference. 1st of all. A god is not just anyone or thing with superior powers or capabilities who is worthy of worship. It is anything that you devote so much of your time to. Some people make money their god, others the television, others food, and others relationships or addictions. So if you devote yourself to watching tv all day or pursuing relationships alot you end up idolising that very thing.
secondly, theres a difference between the 'gods' .
Notice how in the bible when they are referring to God, the 'maker of the universe', they always use a capital G. when they refer to what man has idolised it is a lower case g. it is to show that there is one god and one god only, according to the bible. That is to symbolise his name. its not that complicated as you make it out to be. and believe it or not...Im not a christian, but i believe their is a higher power out there, because, how else would we be here. I find it very hard to swallow or that scientific bullshit about everything being made by an atomic accident. you know what, its quite queer that there are those people out there that Blame god for everything and Dislike Christians but dont have a problem with any other religion on the planet. And just so you know christians are not the only ones that try to 'convert people.'

You got all messed up when you copied the Bible wrong.
When one uses a capital letter it means the word is a proper noun. Such as "G"od is a title for a specific person. Little "g" od is a common noun meaning any kind of entity or thing which would fall under "idol".
This is like "King David was the king of Israel." Cap "K" is the title of David, yet he is still just another king.
If you take another look at Exo 20:3.....you will see that the Bible says - " You shall have no other gods before Me."
Go back and take a basic English course and you won't be so mixed up.

Do remember what the people were praising as their god through the dawn of mankind?
the golden calf, trees, the sun, moon , stars, even now in different parts of the world, cows, rats, insects, are being called gods. among other things.
there was a time when people would sacrifice there children on alters , or slaves , or captive prisoners to their gods.
so now the Question to you is " Are these things a superior power, and worthy of worship ,honor ,praise, and exaltation"???NO!!!!!!!
There is only one True God , Who is Worthy of worship, honor ,praise, and exaltation, and has superior power.

Well, He didn't really say "I am God...no other Gods" - it was "I am Jehovah (or Yahweh) your God...no other Gods" And the Hebrew word for 'god' isn't really interchangeable with 'idol' - the word for 'idol' literally means 'something carved', and is used as something that someone makes that they worship, while the word for 'god' is more directly 'a deity', not so much in the sense of something being worshiped, but rather in the sense of a super-powerful being
The name Jehovah (or Yahweh) is describing the supreme creator of the universe, while the word 'god' is more of a categorical description

You must be careful not to misquote this passage. I am The " Lord " god { worthy of worship honor, praise and exaltation}His name is The Lord, v7-8 gods{ graven images } v9 You shall not bow down unto them.. oh Michael Jackson was an Idol {worshiped } so what is your point!

A. It's been translated into English so the wording is never exact.
B. During that time the Israelites were the only people to be monotheistic.
It basically says "Do not hold other things more important to me." Its not hard to understand if you believe in a divine being.
But what do I know? I'm not an atheist who passes judgement on something they have not read and blind themselves from understanding.

That has more to do with translation then with the actual text itself. In the original the tetragram "YHWH" is used everytime you see the word "God." In most English Bibles the word "LORD" has been used everytime the YHWH is used. It was the tradition of the Jews and a commandment "thou shalt not use my name in vain" that you don't say God's name. So, that's why the substitution occurred. Nowadays, we don't really know how you pronounce that word so there's no way to use the actual name.
In English, that's just what we started calling, him, "God." That became what Christians call him. Different religions have different words they use to designate to their deity.
