What would Mexicans have called a half American Indian - half white from the United States back in the 1800's?

I am writing a book about my grandfather who was half Cherokee Indian and half white living in Mexico in the early to mid 1800's.

Update:

I am sorry if I failed to be politically correct but I wanted an accurate and realistic representation of the era.

People of White and Indian (Native American, native Mexican) ancestry were and are called Mestizo in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. If a Native American like a Cherokee was in Mexico I doubt there would be much difference except language and some customs. I don't know if a Mestizo from the US would be treated any differently.

Assuming the 'white' you're referring to was Spanish the person would be called a Mestizo.

Regardless as to which "white" you were referring to, the person in question would be a mestizo

all things being equal, and being as how I am part Native American and part Scot I would hope that they call him a human being.
