Is it a sin to pray for peace?

49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! 51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. (Luke 12:49-53)

"And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places." (Matthew 24:6,7)

If Jesus says there will be divisions and wars and all kinds of catastrophe, are people who pray for an end to these things really asking God to lie and go back on his word?

I say if you pray for peace, you have made yourself equal to God. Only God will bring peace in the end not us. So, stop praying for peace you selfish Christians. And the hippies will go to hell for rejecting God's word....I say give hate a chance.

In my opinion according to the Bible Gods word was inspired by the Holy Ghost. And Blaspheming the Holy Ghost is a unpardonable sin. So, if Jesus says there will be no peace. And you pray for peace then you blasheme the Holy Ghost and your going to hell.

Jesus said he came to bring a sword not peace...

Just by the other remarks givin by people on here you can see what God means by He came to divide. There is a huge gap between believers and unbelievers. That will not change until the end of time. It is okay to pray for peace. But just remember that this world will be in turmoil until Jesus returns and do not be dismayed by it.

And remember that God doesn't always say yes to us. There cannot be peace on this earth because not everyone draws from the source of peace, God. To make people peaceful would be taking away their free will.

World Peace is not something to long for. Remember that when the anti-Christ reigns he will take the world by peace and for a brief moment the world will united. Many will be decieved by the promise of peace only to find it will bring devestation when the anti Christ is revealed. The verses you have stated help remind us that only God can bring true world peace in His timing. Don't be fooled by man's attempts at world peace.

No! We can never stop sinning completely - does that mean that we should not try not to sin, or not pray that God would help us not to sin? Of course not. We live in a fallen world, and we fallen beings will never be able to bring complete peace. However, we can have SOME peace, in some places. And peace is a good thing - it is NEVER bad to pray for peace. Praying for worldwide complete peace, though...that is kind of strange. It's kind of like praying that you would be perfect in every way: it simply isn't going to happen. However, we can keep trying to make it better and better.

No, first there is some upheaval if a family member becomes a born again believer and then we need to pray for all to be saved, and for peace for ourselves in the midst of chaos, and peace for our family.

Christ only "brings" division because of people's hardness of hearts. They don't readily get saved when one of their loved ones is saved. They usually resent it at first. The Lord prayed for all of our oneness in the spirit very much so don't think he wants division and war at all. Read John 17.

No its not a sin. We cannot gain peace. We as a species will fight aginst eachother. It is darkest before dawn as they say. God has destoried cities, he even destoried the entire planet except the few who he viewed as virtueous. When the end comes it will be by death to most of our race as he has done before. Peace is a goal that we strive to reach but is always just out of our reach.

Since Jesus is the Prince of Peace, no. What this passages means is that families will split because of faith in Christ. There will always be wars and rumors of wars, but ULTIMATE peace can only be found in Christ. Even when wars and strife are going on, there can still be peace with Christ. True peace is not the absence of conflict, it is peace in spite of conflict.

Blessed are the peace makers, cause they will see God. How can it be a sin for some thing like that. But it is foolish to think we will have any lasting peace until Jesus returns. It is too idealistic and this world is too sinful and wicked.

It's apparent that you didn't understand the first verses from Luke - perhaps try reading the NIV version.

In Matthew, the point is for Christians not to worry during these times because He is there for them.

So no, it's not a sin. Why would it be..?

No. God is not some pre-programed computer. He has the ability to change is mind and alter nature if he wishes.

    Source(s): pray for peace.
