1990 Honda Accord--Alternator question?
I have a 1990 Honda Accord EX.. I am pretty sure my alternator is completely done. How much does this part typically cost? Someone told me around $110 then someone else said like $400.. I can't seem to get the AutoZone website and Checker Auto websites to help me and I don't have any mechanic friends or family. Someone help please.

Autozone's price for a rebuilt one is $149.99 including the core charge of $50. Bring back the old one and your final cost is $99.99. I can't guess at the labor cost. Depends on how difficult it is to get to it. It could be anywhere from $80 or less to $180 or more, again depending on how difficult is is to get to. Is it in the open or do you need to remove a power steering pump or a half-axle to get to it?
A dealer would likely charge double for the labor compared to an independent mechanic.
I recently had mine replaced in a 2002 CR-V and I paid a neighbor $100 to do it. I could tell by looking at it that it wasn't something I had the patience to tackle, although I believe I could have done it.

Your best value would be a replacement from a wrecking yard. Strangely enough, it will likely be more reliable than an aftermarket alternator. Aftermarket alternators and starters, among lesser parts, have a terrible reputation for reliability. Another option is to replace the brush assembly (part 5 in the first source), which is probably the only thing wrong with it.

to buy a brand new one will be about 400 bucks if you take it somewhere... if you can manage a few bolts to remove it and then reinstall it should cost about 200 to begin with and then take the original core back to the parts store and ull get about 70-80 back.. they sell remanufactured ones for this price but charge a core fee in case you dont return it... its the companies way of getting their money for the one they sold back and being able to create a new one to make more money

Should be around $250 installed with a rebuilt one.Ask around and locate a shop in the neighborhood, the job is pretty straight forward, any mechanic can do it.
