Am I supposed to tip the newspaper deliverer?
Attached to my newspaper this morning was a handwritten note that said "Thank you for the _____". I really appreciate it....etc. etc. Is this a nice way of saying "thanks for nothing"? My parents never tipped the newspaper people and I've never heard that it is customary but I don't want to be rude either.

Yeah! You do it once per year (around Christmas) but you don't have to.
You can have to added to the credit/debit card used for the billing of the newspaper or leave it in an envelope that the deliverer provide.
Sometimes, the deliverer leaves a cell number for you to let them know its in the mailbox, hidden elsewhere or to ring the doorbell.
Since most deliverer pass by really early, people opt to leave it somewhere or have it billed to their card. $15 is what we give and I think that is fare for being up so early in the rain and snow.

I have never taken newspaper delivery (big waste of trees, in my opinion), but my parents always did, and always tipped the newspaper boy. Best way to ensure your paper ends up on your steps/porch, rather than in the bushes!
My parents also always tipped the mail carrier. I have heard that nowadays monetary gifts to the mail carrier are not allowed, but a nice card thanking him/her for their service would be a nice gesture (especially is you receive lots of mail or packages!). Just leave it in your mailbox, addressed to "our mail carrier," if you do not know your mail carrier's name. Ours was Ed, but nowadays people aren't so friendly, unfortunately.
These are just small gestures that will be remembered long after the holiday is gone.

I always tip my delivery guy every time I send in a payment. I get very excellent service. Also, I delivered papers for four long, cold years. You hope folks appreciate it. A small Christmas bonus is sufficient.

The note was left blank? That was kind of awkward....
If you've been getting your newspaper delivered on time everyday for the entire year, you can but you don't HAVE to.
