  • My car shows that I have %30 oil life left but...?

I've driven almost 7000 miles w/o changing it. It's the first car I've had that gives me that information. I haven't actually looked at the oil yet. I guess I'm just wondering if these types of digital/computer gages are acurate?

  • Am I supposed to tip the newspaper deliverer?

Attached to my newspaper this morning was a handwritten note that said "Thank you for the _____". I really appreciate it....etc. etc. Is this a nice way of saying "thanks for nothing"? My parents never tipped the newspaper people and I've never heard that it is customary but I don't want to be rude either.

  • Should I pay $120 to have my transmission looked at?

I own a 99 Chevy Cavalier and I'm pretty sure the transmission is going on it. The other day when I put it in drive it clunked really loudly and when I tried to move forward it went really slow and was really loud. Then almost everytime I started to drive forward after coming to a stop it would rev the engine and then lurch forward/jerk a couple times before getting going. I had a four hour drive ahead of me and once I got on the highway it did fine. At one point I stopped at a gas station. When I put the car in reverse to back out of the parking spot it would barely move in a jerky motion backward until I got out far enough to put it in drive. That time when I put it in drive it worked fine and I got on the highway again and didn't have any more problems even when I got off the highway and had to stop and go a few times. After unpacking I had to go to the store and my car did fine backing out and going forward and all the way to the store. On the way back it did fine again until I got home and I heard a loud clunk again when I parked. By the way, my transmission fluid is not low.

OK sorry that was so long but every detail may help.

So there are several things I'm thinking and I need some advice.

    1. The last two times I had my oil changed I was told I needed to have my transmission fluid flushed b/c it was really dirty. I never did have it flushed so I'm wondering if the problem could be that simple. Another mechanic told me that's probably not the problem and that changing the fluid could actually make it worse.

    2. Since the problem only seems to occur when I'm backing up or moving forward from a stop, could there just be a brake that's sticking? I recently had new brake pads put on the front as well as a new rotor on the front drivers side.

    3. The transmission mechanic I talked to said that it would cost me $40 to put it on the computer and make sure it's not some other problem diagnosable that way. If they don't find anything that way they will drop the pan and look for metal shavings from my transmission which would cost me $80. If they find shavings then he said worse case scenario it could cost me $2300 to rebuild my transmission which I can't afford and frankly is probably more than the car is worth anyway.

I'm unemployed and receiving minimal assistance so I don't have much money saved. My overall question is do you think it is worth it for me to spend $120 to figure out if my transmission needs to be rebuilt? If it does need to be rebuilt, I can't afford to do it, and then I'm out the $120. Also if it sounds like some other problem please let me know!

Tremendous thanks to anyone that takes the time to read this!

  • Why does my car start more easily when it is cool out?

It's a '99 Chevy Cavalier. It starts right up when it's cool outside but when it gets hot outside (like in the 80's) it takes forever to start. After I get it started the first time when it's hot out, it usually starts easily then next time I try to start it as long as it hasn't been parked for a long time, like when I go to the store. What is the problem and is it easily and cheaply fixed? Can I do it myself?

  • What can I do about my drinking father?

My dad has a medical condition in his legs and back that cause him a lot of pain. As a result he has been taking really strong pain medication like oxycontin/vicodin daily for several years.

He used to be a major alcoholic and he began mixing alcohol with his meds. It got to the point where he would fall down and not be able to get himself up off the floor. My mother is not strong enough to help him up so she called my brother to help. She had to call the ambulance a few times too.

After that happened several times he was scheduled to have surgery. He said he quit drinking before surgery. After the surgery he was crazy for about a week. He was saying things that didn't make any sense and doing things totally out of his character. Turns out he had not quit drinking before the surgery and he was going through withdrawals which were making him act crazy.

When he started acting normally again and we told him about his behavior. He was embarrased and really did quit drin

  • How do I ask my niece if she's gay?

My niece is 15. My mom recently told me that she thinks she is gay because she has walked in on her several times watching "lesbian" tv shows. She also said that she and my niece and my nieces two cousins who are the same age as my niece were playing a game of taboo and the word was "kiss" and one of the cousins said to my niece "this is what Anna wants to do to you".

I don't care if she's gay or not, I just want her to know that I would support her if she is. Most of my family will not be as accepting as I am so I want to offer her my support.

I'm just not sure how to go about asking her about it. I don't want to make her uncomfortable. I think by 15 she'd know whether she was gay or not but I also think that she could still be unsure and is just curious and still figuring things out. I also don't know what kind of "lesbian" show my mom is talking about. If she was watching Tila Tequila for instance, that doesn't mean she's gay.

  • Why does the gas guage on my 99 chevy cavalier fluctuate?

After filling up the gas guage works fine until it gets somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 tank. Then it starts fluctuating telling me I have anywhere between zero gas and 1/2 tank. I have no idea how much gas I have left other than to estimate my gas mileage.

Anybody know why it is doing this? Can I fix it myself? If not is it expensive to fix?
