Can I leave a car or tractor battery in the cold?

I have a car and tractor I only use occasionally. They are stored in a barn that is not heated, but is closed from the elements. If I only start them once a week or so, do I need to pull them and put them in when I want to run them, or can they take the cold?

As long as you go out there once a week they should be fine. I'd also take them for a drive around the driveway to avoid flat spots on the tires and give the battery a chance to charge a little.

They will be fine in the cold. I have a 70's model tractor that has had the same Duralast battery on it for 5 years, and it is half exposed to every element. If you have a major snow storm coming I would maybe cover the tractor battery, but other than the batteries can handle it.

The cold doesn't do unused batteries any good. If you are not going to use it for the winter, it would be best to get a trickle charger on the battery to keep it at full charge. The one I use will automatically shut off when the battery is fully charged. You may have to disconnect it and connect it back ever month or so, or every couple of weeks, switch it to the other battery. Most people have good intentions of starting them every week or so, but in my experience, it just doesn't happen throughout a long period of time. It is still a good idea to start them at least once a month to circulate the fuel and oil. I would also use some kind of fuel treatment in them. untreated gas goes bad in a month to 6 weeks.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, for a short period of time. If you are going to store it for more than a day or two you should bring it somewhere warmer.

they will be fine where you have them, it doesn't really help to bring them in out of the cold weather.
