What is wrong with my cat's eye?

I am beginning to get very worried. A couple of days ago, after my cat came in from outside, I noticed his eye was weird, but I chopped it up to him just getting into a fight with another cat. His eye has gotten worse however; A yellowish sticky pusslike substance enclosed the bottom of his eye, and he can barely open it. I need to know what this is, and if I should call the vet, or if it will heal on its own.....(I'm not exactly flowing in cash, so I hope its the latter.) Thanks...

Update:

yea to be honest im almost 100% sure its conjunctivitous or something else along those lines. thats a good point about the fight and i realized it cant be because the first day i noticed it was only happening to one eye, so i carefully wiped it off and later he went back outside and then the next day when he came inside it was happening to both of his eyes. hes an all black cat but hes also very furry which is awesome, but it literally looked like he was crying yellow mustard tears. very hard to see, for both of us. im taking him to the vet asap because i also heard conjuctivitous is very contagious and humans can get it from their cats, can anyone back that up? Also a guesstimate on how much this could cost would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the great advice all of you and anyone else with some more.

it could be something like conjunctivitis or a more serious infection.

like you would do if it was your eye, get some lukewarm water with salt dissolved in it and bathe his eye using cottonwool, warning: he's not going to like it!! but it has to be done! make sure you rinse it off with clean warm water after though. do this twice a day and keep a very close eye on him to make sure its not getting worse- its a good way to save money on expensive eye drops from the vets if it is something simple. it also might be good to keep the cat inside until it clears incase he scratches it more/gets involved with another cat.

BUT if it does get worse, you have to put your kitty first and get him to the vets, he might be in pain and you don't want to risk him going blind! in my vets there's a notice up about payment and what to do if you cannot afford it, so ask your vets for advice before going i know it'll be hard, i'd find it hard to swallow my pride and do it, but for the health of your kitty it's very important!

my little kitten seemed to have something up with her eye the other day not being able to open one up properly so i just kept batheing it, and it seems fine now.

    so good luck! :)

He needs to see the vet and soon otherwise he might lose that eye as infection has already set in. He needs special ointment for it and some antibiotics to help it heal. Fortunately it will probably only be one visit and the ointment is not real expensive but it has to be done.

If it were your eye, you'd want to see a doctor.

Best of luck, like kids our pets can get hurt when we can least afford it. Consider turning him into an indoor only kitty and he won't have to fight off the bullies.

I think something is wrong with his eye because I don't think those sticky stuff is a result of fighting with another cat. and I think he's a little ill, or sick. I think you need to take him to the vet because if you ignore it, he might lose his sight. healthy eyes don't have that sticky substance, and it's not good for him either. and maybe he didn't get enough vitamin from his food. so I think you need to take him to the vet and do whatever the vet wants you to do.

The cat obviously has a serious eye infection, he may have a foreign object in the eye or he could have been scratched by another cat. If it were mine, I would take him to the vet ASAP.

Yes, it is serious, and yes, he needs to see a vet. ASAP. He could lose sight in that eye if you let it get worse.
